World Cup opener in Carezza: The “Azzurri” can hardly wait

13 “Azzurri” will start at the home race tomorrow, Tuesday. The snowboard elite were originally supposed to meet in the Carezza ski area last Saturday, but due to the lack of snow across the country, the parallel giant slalom had to be postponed for a few days. Roland Fischler and Co. can hardly wait for the season to start. However, the Villnößer himself does not have too high expectations for the first race of the new season. In the fall he was diagnosed with a torn tendon in his right thigh, which is why the South Tyrolean is still behind on training. “I've only trained on snow for 15 days so I can't expect too much. I feel comfortable on the snowboard and over time I will definitely make up for the training deficit,” said the 34-year-old.

As far as expectations are concerned, Aaron March is also keeping a low profile: “I think I’m ready for the first race. However, there are always a lot of question marks before the first race. We have prepared well. Here in Carezza there are always excellent conditions. Even though the temperatures are high, I believe that the slopes are well prepared. Tomorrow I’ll do my best and then we’ll see what happens.”

Local hero Christoph Mick, who celebrated his best World Cup result in the parallel slalom last year with sixth place in Carezza, is also looking forward to the home race. “It will definitely be more difficult than last year. I feel more comfortable in slalom than in giant slalom. However, I will try my best. I don't feel any pressure. Now I'm used to racing here at home. The only difference to the other World Cup events is that I can sleep at home,” laughs the 26-year-old from Welschnofen. Edwin Coratti is also ready: “We trained hard all summer long. Now the time has finally come. We’ll see how it goes and where we stand,” explains the Vinschger native.

Mirco Felicetti from Moena is also part of the Alpine snowboarder World Cup team for the first time this year. “As always, we will give it our all. Three races await us in the next four days. I think that's good, because if a race doesn't go as planned, you immediately have the opportunity to make amends. I'm also pleased that a team competition will be held for the first time this winter. I think this could be a good advertisement for our sport,” says Felicetti.

The women's hopes rest on Boccacini and Ochner Corinna Boccacini, who narrowly missed out on a medal at the Sochi Olympics, is currently struggling with knee problems. However, she doesn't let that bother her: “I prepared myself as well as I could for the new season and I'm happy with my form. A new season begins tomorrow. I just think about driving a good race, then we'll see where we stand compared to the competition."

Nadya Ochner also comes to the first race of the season with a lot of self-confidence. Last year she finished fourth in the slalom in Carezza, just missing a place in the top three. “It will be difficult to repeat a result like that, I like the slalom races more. Nevertheless, I hope to be able to improve in giant slalom this season. My goal is to reach the final of the best 3, because from there anything is possible. The race takes place on artificial snow. “I’m glad that we found the same conditions in the Passeier Valley last week and were able to prepare ourselves well for the first race,” explains the Burgstall native.

Carezza is also the venue for a European Ski Cup This winter, not only a Snowboard World Cup but also a European Ski Cup will take place on the Pra Di Tori slope. As part of the continental racing series, a giant slalom and a slalom will be held from Thursday 18th to Friday 19th December.

On Tuesday, December 16th, the new World Cup winter for Alpine snowboarders officially begins with the parallel giant slalom on the Pra Di Tori slope in Carezza. The Italian national team is ready for the only home race this winter and is really dying for it to finally get started.
