World Cup opener in Carezza: The “Azzurri” are ready

Race director Cesare Pisoni believes in a podium finish: “We have been able to train optimally here in Carezza over the last few days. The preparation is good and we have several athletes on our team who can reach the podium. I would like to thank the organizers who were willing to hold two races again this year, otherwise there would have only been two slalom races this winter. “This gives us the chance to get two good results at the same time,” says Pisoni.

“Our athletes are all in top shape and are going into tomorrow's race with high hopes. Roland Filehner and Aaron March are always good for a win, and Corinna Boccacini can also make it to the final. “I’m also betting on local hero Christoph Mick, I just hope he’s not too nervous,” Pisoni continued.

A total of 12 “Azzurri” will be at the start. The men's teams include the South Tyroleans Fiwickeler, March, Erlacher, Mick, Coratti and Hofer, as well as Ponti, Bormolini and Felicetti. In the women's competition, however, the two Burgstallers Nadya Ochner and Andrea Tribus are starting alongside Corinna Boccacini.

Probably the strongest “Azzurro”, Roland Fiwickeler, is currently only “80% fit”, as he explains himself. Nevertheless, he wanted to fight for victory. “I already won here two years ago. The snow conditions are optimal. Unfortunately I had problems with the material, so I will start tomorrow with the board I used last year. I also still have mild back pain. I won’t be in top shape for the next few weeks, but I want to try to be at the front tomorrow.”

Aaron March also wants to have a say in the awarding of the victory. He is particularly pleased that there will only be one run in the finals. (Single-run format). “The races guarantee high excitement and spectacle, but are now much shorter. “In addition, the result of the qualification is enhanced because the best can then choose the slope they want to ski on in the final,” says March.

“It is the first World Cup race this winter and for us also the first real comparison with the international competition. I also have to compliment the organizers who prepared the slopes perfectly.”

For women, Corinna Boccacini is the driving force of the “Azzurre”. The 28-year-old from Udine wants to start the Olympic season with a sense of achievement. “Compared to before, I have to say that I'm really well prepared for the winter this year. I believe I can keep up with the strongest and I want to prove it here in Carezza. My goal is to get to the final. This year I’m riding with new material and that fits too.”
