Winter sports association presents competition calendar

“All clubs, not just the World Cup organizers, work excellently, they organize competitions every year that are of a very high level,” praised Hermann Ambach, the President of the South Tyrolean State Winter Sports Association, who was among the guests of honor State Sports Councilor Martha Stocker, the national FISI President Flavio Roda and CONI boss Heinz Gutweniger were able to welcome us. Ambach recalled that over 250 races are held in our country in winter.

Carezza starts things off The World Cup races start in South Tyrol with the snowboarders, who are coming to Carezza for the fifth year in a row. On Saturday, December 12th, a parallel giant slalom will take place on the Pra-Di-Tori piste on the Karerpass. World champion Roland Filehner has already celebrated two victories in Carezza in 2011 and 2014.

The classics in Val Gardena and Alta Badia A week later, from December 18th to 21st, the Alpine skiing classics on the Saslong in Val Gardena and the Gran Risa in Alta Badia are on the program. Two speed races will take place in Val Gardena on December 18th (super-G) and 19th (downhill), while in Val Badia on December 20th (giant slalom) and 21st (parallel giant slalom) the technicians will race for World Cup points.

Premiere for Watles At the same time, the ski crossers are in action on the slopes of Haunold in Innichen. The Hochpustertal will be the venue for the FIS Ski Cross World Cup races for the 19th time in a row on December 20th and 7th. Just three weeks later, on January 10th, Watles is hosting a ski crosser World Cup race for the first time.

Double event in Dobbiaco On the third weekend in December, the elite in international cross-country skiing also come to South Tyrol. A sprint race in free technique will take place in Toblach on December 19th and the following day a 15 km race for men and a 10 km race for women in classic technique will take place. After the turn of the year, on January 8th, the cross-country skiing team will return to the Toblach Nordic Arena for a second time.

Antholz, the biathlon mecca The absolute winter sports highlight is still the biathlon races in Antholz. In the third week of January (January 21th to 24st) the best ski hunters in the world will delight the numerous fans in the South Tyrol Arena. Top-class sport paired with a top entertainment program make Antholz and South Tyrol the mecca of biathlon for a week.

Natural track tobogganists compete in Valdaora and Nova Ponente There are also two local World Cup races in natural track tobogganing. From January 8th to 10th, Patrick Pigneter & Co. will be in Olang, three weeks later, from January 29th to 31st, in Deutschnofen.

European Alpine Cup races begin on December 16th in Obereggen Several European Cup races are also on the program again this year. Although the women's European Cup slaloms in Innichen no longer appear on the calendar, the Sarner Speed Week in Reinswald returns to the second highest racing series at the beginning of February 2016 after a year's break. The first European Ski Cup race of the season in South Tyrol is traditionally the slalom in Obereggen on December 16th. Three days later, a parallel slalom will be held in St. Vigil. In biathlon, two IBU races will take place in Ridnaun (December 11th - 13th) and Martell (March 10th - 13th). In cross-country skiing, the Continental Cup will stop at the Nordic Arena in Toblach in mid-March 2016, while the Snowboarders compete for European Cup points in Ratschings on March 12th and 13th. Passeier will host the European Natural Track Luge Championships from February 5th to 7th, 2016, Latsch will host the Junior World Championships a week later. In February there are also two general class Italian championships taking place in South Tyrol: the natural track tobogganers determine their Italian champions in Nova Ponente and the ski mountaineers in Badia.

Nationwide racing series In most sports there are nationwide racing series again this year. These racing series are the heart of the state winter sports association. Almost all local world-class athletes started their careers here. The most important series in Alpine skiing is the Marlene Cup, which begins on December 6th in Sulden with a slalom and includes 13 races. The Alpine also compete in the Raiffeisen Grand Prix, in the VSS series and in the Euregio Master Cup. The Volksbank Trophy for cross-country skiers starts in Toblach on December 12th and is being held for the 36th time this year. Raiffeisen, on the other hand, supports the youth series of natural track tobogganers. There are also racing series in snowboarding and freestyle. The traditional cross-country races, such as the Pustertaler Skimarathon, the Pfitscher Lauf, Dobbiaco-Cortina, the Gsieser-Tal-Lauf and the Ridnauner Volkslauf are of course also on the program again.

Maranelli, Gallonetto, Contini, Carli and Vasarin awarded

In the Puntay cellar, Silvano Maranelli was honored today by the national association for his services as a referee. There was also a prize for Umberto Gallonetto and Giovanni Contini. Both have ended their careers. Gallonetto was responsible for the homologation of the slopes, while Contini was the doctor for the state winter sports association. Guido Carli and Luciano Vasarin were also honored for their many years of service as referees.
