Snowkite elite meet for the European Championships at Lake Reschen

The snow- and wind-safe Lake Reschen lies at 1500 meters and is considered the snowkiting mecca in Europe. When snow kiting, athletes are pulled over the snow with their skis or on a snowboard by huge stunt kites.

Snowkiters will compete in three disciplines over three days. The European Championships will open on Friday with a “long-distance race” around Lake Reschen. On Saturday and Sunday, the athletes will show off their skills in the racing discipline, in which the athletes have to circumnavigate a triangular course known from sailing several times. In these races, top speeds of up to 100 km/h can be achieved.

If conditions are suitable with lots of snow, the freestyle competition can also be started. This isn't about speed. Rather, it's about impressing the jury with jumps up to 10 meters high and spectacular tricks.

The European Championships at Lake Reschen are part of the World Cup The special thing about the “IKA Snowkite European Championship” at Lake Reschen is that it is also part of the “Amarok Snowkite World Cup”. The prestigious titles are awarded in “Long-Distance”, “Racing” and “Freestyle”.

The spectators can expect exciting duels for the World Cup victory between the multiple world and European racing/ski champions Florian Gruber (Germany) and Felix Kersten (Germany). Like last year, Ronny Bollhalder (Switzerland) will try to win the “Amarok Snowkite World Cup” on the snowboard.

“The sport of snowkiting is not as well-known as other sports such as skiing or biathlon. However, snowkiting is quite unique due to its uniqueness and Lake Reschen with its striking church tower in the lake is the ideal location for it. From February 15th to 17th, 2019, the international snowkite elite will meet for the European Championships at Lake Reschen. Up to 100 participants from all over Europe are expected in the Reschenpass holiday region in Vinschgau.
