This is what the medals look like in Sochi

The gold, silver and bronze medals that will be the focus of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi were presented to the public in St. Petersburg.

The approximately 1.300 discs produced have a diameter of ten centimeters, are one centimeter thick and weigh between 460 and 531 grams, depending on the color.

The design is intended to symbolize the landscape of Sochi as well as the ethnic and cultural diversity of Russia. The Olympic rings shine on the front, while the name of the competition and the Sochi 2014 logo are engraved on the back.

“The medals reflect the contrasts of our country, where Europe meets Asia and wild nature meets megapolises and where innovations emerge alongside the rich Russian culture,” says the organizing committee’s presentation. Each medal has a transparent polycarbonate insert.

They won the most, a total of eight, in Lillehammer in 1994; three years ago in Vancouver they had to be content with Armin Zöggeler's bronze medal. It was already his fifth medal in five different games; no other South Tyrolean winter sports athlete was so successful. The tobogganer Paul Hildgartner and the two alpine skiers Gustav Thöni and Isolde Kostner won three precious metals. 16 of the 34 medals came from tobogganing, 10 from the Alpine, three each from biathlon and bobsleigh.
