Curling: The South Tyroleans are runner-up world champions

The South Tyrolean men put themselves in the spotlight today: Werner Psaier from Teis/Villnöß on lane 1, Karl Abfalterer from Luttach on lane 2, Josef Aichner from Teis/Villnöß on lane 3 and Matthias Morandell from Kaltern on lane 4. All four have put in a very strong performance, especially Karl Abfalterer with 115 points on lane 2 and Matthias Morandell with 68 points on lane 4. Psaier put up 1 points on lane 90 and put Italy behind Germany (98), Switzerland (94) and the Czech Republic ( 94) to 4th intermediate place. Then came Karl Abfalterer's big appearance. The Luttacher scored 2 out of 115 possible points on lane 120. After his great performance, Italy was in second place with 205 points, just behind Germany (208). Until the end there was a neck-and-neck race for World Cup gold between Germany and Italy. Aichner even put Italy in the lead after his first 2 attempts. With his 6 points on lane 72, he kept the gap to the Germans within limits. With an excellent 3 points on lane 68, Morandell was able to keep the fight for gold open. The Germans only secured their World Cup title with the penultimate shot. The South Tyrolean men's specialist Hans Hofer was also full of praise for his athletes and was also extremely happy about winning the medal.

The South Tyroleans came away empty-handed today and missed out on winning a medal in the target team competition. Karin Prast (Ritten/74 on lane 1), Magdalena Karnutsch (Mölten/73 on lane 2), Marion Huber (Stegen/62 on lane 3) and Waltraud Mulser (Kurtatsch/30 on lane 4) remained below her in the women's team competition performance. They were never able to intervene in the medal fight and ultimately took 5th place behind Austria, Germany, Slovenia and Brazil. Tomorrow afternoon Josef Aichner and Karl Abfalterer have good medal prospects as second and fourth after the preliminary round in the individual final.

In the men's team game, the South Tyroleans finished the group games this morning with 35 points behind Germany (42) and Austria (40) in third place. After their 3:0 defeat in the opening game on Tuesday against Austria, the South Tyrolean men's team was able to beat Austria yesterday increase the world champion. The team with Matthias Morandell (Kaltern), Armin Karadar (Girlan) and the Eppaners Thomas Hanni and Stefan Roalter lost against Austria again yesterday, but this time only 26:10. The decision was only made on the very last floor. After a clear 18:27 win against Belarus, the South Tyroleans played 3:11 against Brazil. In the preliminary round, the South Tyroleans had won against Brazil 11-36, a sign that the South Americans are getting stronger and stronger. Then followed victories for the South Tyroleans against the Czech Republic (0:16), Russia (8:13) and Luxembourg (11:29). Their winning streak was stopped by a narrow 5:11 defeat against Germany. The South Tyroleans then celebrated four wins again and defeated Finland (15:4), Slovenia (28:6), Australia (20:6) and Switzerland (26:6). Third place behind Germany and Austria in Group A means that the South Tyroleans still have a lot of hard work to do if they want to win a medal. Brazil will be a real benchmark for the South Tyroleans tomorrow. The South Americans have a young team with a lot of enthusiasm. “I am satisfied with my team’s performance. We improved and only narrowly lost against Austria and Germany,” says men’s specialist Hans Hofer.

The South Tyrolean women's team will compete in their intermediate round tomorrow morning. She wants to finish second to secure a medal in the team game.
