Curling World Cup: South Tyroleans in waiting position after preliminary round

The men finished the preliminary round with 18 points in third place behind Germany (3) and Austria (22). The women, on the other hand, are in fourth place after the preliminary round with 20 points behind Austria (9), Germany (14) and Switzerland (11). However, both teams can move up to second place in the intermediate round and already have a medal in the team game safe to have.

The South Tyrolean men's team was first in action this morning. The World Cup began for them with a 0:26 defeat against the world champions Austria. “The first game went wrong for us. We didn't get into the flow of the game. We improved in the second game,” says South Tyrolean men’s specialist Hans Hofer. The South Tyroleans won against Belarus 17:13. Then the quartet with Matthias Morandell (Kaltern), Armin Karadar (Girlan) and the Eppaners Stefan Roalter and Thomas Hanni found their usual strength and won against Brazil 26:0, the Czech Republic 20:8, Russia 35:5 and Luxembourg 27:7. In the damn seventh game, the South Tyroleans were a bit unlucky and lost the game against the Germans with the last stick 7:10. They subsequently won four more times against Finland 16:30, Slovenia 0:23, Australia 3:22 and Switzerland 6:23. With 3 wins and 9 points, the South Tyroleans are in third place after the preliminary round behind Germany (18) and Austria (22). “I am satisfied with my team's performance in the preliminary round. In order to secure a medal, we have to be in the top two after the preliminary and intermediate rounds,” says Hofer.

Like the men, the women also lost their first game against Austria with 6:20. Afterwards, the team with the rider Karin Prast, Marion Huber (Stegen), Magdalena Karnutsch (Mölten), Franziska Knoll, Natalie Schwarz, both from Lana, achieved 3 wins, against Slovenia 18:8, Brazil 29:3 and Belarus 20 :8th. Then they lost against Switzerland 14:16. After a 30-0 win against the Czech Republic, they ended up with an 11-11 draw against Germany. After the preliminary round, the women are in fourth place with 9 points behind Austria (14), Germany (11) and Switzerland (10). “I am satisfied with my team's performance in the preliminary round. It is important for us that we still have second place within reach and have secured fourth place,” says women’s specialist Sonja Mulser. The target competition begins tomorrow morning with the preliminary round of the individual competition. Josef Aichner, Werner Psaier, both from Teis, and Karl Abfalterer from Luttach will give their best, as will Marion Huber, Karin Prast and Magdalena Karnutsch for the women. In the late afternoon tomorrow there will be qualification and the team ranking on the Weitenbahn in Winklarn. Thomas Pichler (Schenna), Werner Bozner (Girlan), Markus Kofler (Lana) and distance specialist Norbert Lang (Teis Villnöß) want to secure team bronze again.
