South Tyrol is in ski cross fever

In just over two weeks the ski world will be looking at the Sesto Dolomites, when a ski cross World Cup stage will be held for the seventh time at Haunold near San Candido. The race track will be a total of 1,4 kilometers long, equipped with numerous bumps, steep curves and a target jump of up to 60 meters. “Last year we had to pass due to the lack of snow, but this year everything will work out perfectly,” promises Innichen’s OK boss Helmut Senfter. He relies on a team of Canadian track builders who will also ensure perfect slopes at Watles a few weeks later. People are particularly excited there, as it is the first World Cup event to be held in the Vinschger ski area. "For three days everything will revolve around ski cross sport. But in the days before, numerous national teams will train at Watles and thus ensure an international flair," explains Gerald Burger, who heads the OK team.

Among the more than a hundred athletes from around twenty nations who will be competing in San Candido and Watles are also ski crossers from South Tyrol, namely Sabine Wolfsgruber, Debora Pixner, Marco Tomasi and Stefan Thanei. The two women in the Italian team in particular have big plans: “We want to consistently finish in the top ten. That is our goal and we work on it every day with a lot of dedication,” explain Wolfsgruber and Pixner. The situation is different for Marco Tomasi, who has recently been slowed down by injuries. “These have now been overcome. I now want to work my way forward again,” said the man from Bolzano. One of the oldest athletes in the ski cross circuit is 34-year-old Stefan Thanei, who is still bursting with energy: "I want to ski even more aggressively this season and attack at full speed." Thanei and Co. will have their first chance to do so next weekend at the World Cup opener in Montafon. Afterwards the anticipation for the two home races can increase.

For the first time ever, two stages of the Ski Cross World Cup will be held on the local slopes. From December 18th to 20th, the spectacular ski circus will stop at Haunold, and on January 9th and 10th, Watles will be the venue for a World Cup event for the first time.
