Drastic measures: FISI pulls the ripcord

In a telephone conference on Monday it was decided that winter sports events of all disciplines and categories in Italy would be suspended with immediate effect. Training, races and travel for athletes, doctors and teams are therefore cancelled. Italian athletes are no longer allowed to take part in all foreign races. An exception applies to these athletes The exception here are those athletes who are still fighting for World Cup balls in a discipline or who are already at the respective competition location. Specifically, this means: The Ski ladies are on regular duty in Åre (Sweden) from Thursday to Saturday Men at the weekend in Kranjska Gora (Slovenia). The Ski Azzurri at the Junior World Championships will also remain in Narvik, Norway.

The Female ski jumpers Lara Malsiner is currently in Northern Europe and will compete in her last competitions in Trondheim (Norway). Also the Biathlon team will be deployed in Kontiolahti (Finland) and Oslo (Norway) over the next two weeks. Federico Pellegrino will be the only Italian cross-country skier to compete in Quebec (Canada) and Minneapolis (USA), while the Snowboard crosser will conclude their season in Veysonnaz (Switzerland). Speed skier Simone Origone is also allowed to take part in the World Cup races in Formigal (Spain) and Andorra.

“It was not an easy decision,” explains FISI President Flavio Roda. “But it was necessary to protect the health of the athletes and coaches in view of the spreading coronavirus. I hope that we can get through this difficult phase as quickly as possible and get back to day-to-day business.” How long the suspension of activities will last is currently unclear.
