Three precious metals for the South Tyroleans at the end of the European Championship

First, Marion Huber (25) from Stegen won the silver medal in an exciting match in the final of the women's individual competition. The South Tyrolean women then secured bronze in the team game. At the end there was also silver for the South Tyrolean men's team in the team game.

In the final of the women's individual competition, Huber was in an ungrateful fourth place with 2 attempts to go. Then the Stegen native mobilized all her strength again and conjured up two great final attempts on the ice with 10 and 8 points. Huber thus moved up to silver. The Austrian Simone Steiner became the superior individual European champion with 2 points ahead of Marion Huber (684) and the German Verena Gotzler (641). Melanie Eder (638) from Mölten achieved 20th place with 537 points with a good performance in her first European Championship start for women. The rider Karin Prast (8) came tenth. “I’m really happy about the silver medal. Everything went according to plan. In the end I was able to move up to silver with two excellent attempts. The Austrian Simone Steiner was out of reach for me today,” said Marion Huber after her great competition. The Stegen native won her second individual women's medal with silver after the bronze medal at the 498 World Championships on the Ritten.

In the subsequent men's final, the current vice world champion Josef Aichner (55) from Teis was unable to intervene in the medal fight and reached 616th place with 6 points. His club colleague Hubert Rabanser (55) took 562th place with 10 points. This time the Austrians won the medals. Thomas Fuchs won with an excellent 741 points ahead of Matthias Taxacher (708) and Franz Roth (700).

In the team game on Saturday morning, the South Tyrolean men's team with Karl Abfalterer (Luttach), Armin Karadar (Girlan/Eppan), Stefan Roalter (St. Michael/Eppan) and Martin Kerschbaumer (Völs) fought for a place in qualification 1 Final. The South Tyroleans were able to beat the Germans 28:21 with a great performance and thus made it to the final. In the final, however, the Germans were in a class of their own and were able to turn the tables. From the second turn onwards, the Germans rushed towards an undisputed victory due to major mistakes by the South Tyrolean team and won clearly with 2:34.

The South Tyrolean women's team with captain Sonja Mulser (St. Michael/Eppan), Marion Huber (Stegen/Bruneck), Franziska Knoll (Lana) and Sophia Enderle (St. Michael/Eppan) was able to reach Kehre 9 after a balanced game Clearly won the elimination against Slovenia with 38:18. In qualification 2, the South Tyroleans lost to the Austrians 24:40 and thus secured the bronze medal.

We wanted to get gold so that Marion Huber could have taken home a whole set of medals. Today our team couldn't perform as usual. We made too many mistakes. In our win against Slovenia, we only benefited from their major mistakes and won the game. I'm proud that Marion won the silver medal in the individual competition today."

Men’s specialist Matthias Elsler: “In the team game we achieved more than we expected with the silver medal. We had a mixed team of 3 experienced and 2 young players. In final game 1 we made it into the final with a great performance against the Germans. In the final we made big mistakes on the 2nd and 3rd bends, which you can't afford against the Germans, and then you're straight away on the losing road. In the target team competition we fell short of expectations. Some players couldn't cope with the 4 meter shorter track in the curling hall. In the individual competition, Josef Aichner confirmed his performance with 6th place.”

The European curling championship for women and men for South Tyrolean curling athletes ended successfully on Saturday in the LEDO Arena in Kaunas/Lithuania. On the final day there were still 3 medals for the local stick athletes.
