FISI athlete of the year: Brignone beats Wierer

It has been a tradition for years that Italy's winter sports fans choose their athlete of the year. This year it was a special election, after all Corona caused a chaotic 2020 season. And the announcement of the result did not take place at the Skipass winter sports trade fair in Modena, as is traditional, but via the Internet. Nevertheless, in the end there is one athlete at the top, namely Federica Brignone. The Aostan woman made history this year by becoming the first Italian woman to win the overall Alpine skiing World Cup.

“I am proud to win this title. It is the first time in my career that I have received this honor and therefore a further confirmation for me,” explained Brignone. According to the Italian winter sports association, a total of tens of thousands of votes were cast.

Brignone beat Dorothea Wierer in the final. The Rasner biathlete also achieved something historic in 2020: On the one hand, she was able to defend the overall World Cup, and on the other hand, she won 4 medals at the home World Championships in Antholz, 2 of them gold. Wierer will be able to get over this “defeat”, after all, the 30-year-old had already secured the title of FISI Athlete of the Year last year.

Many other South Tyroleans have received this honor in recent years, including Armin Zöggeler (2014), Dominik Paris and Christof Innerhofer (2013 and 2011), Denise Karbon (2008) and Manfred Mölgg (2007).
