Johaug, Riiber & Co.: The stars of the Nordic World Ski Championships

The World Championships in Allgäu are the highlight for Nordic skiers this year. Some Scandinavian winter sports stars had skipped several competitions due to concerns about the coronavirus. After meticulous preparation, they want to start in the Allgäu in top shape. These are the big international stars of the scene:

THERESA JOHAUG: The triple world champion from Seefeld 2019 is no longer as dominant as she was last year. Nevertheless, the 32-year-old Norwegian is also one of the top favorites in Oberstdorf. Johaug's form is particularly difficult to assess this year because, like many other Norwegians, she missed several international races. Jessica Diggins from the USA is the strongest woman in the World Cup this season.

JARL MAGNUS RIIBER: As was the case last year, the Norwegian is the outstanding man in the Nordic combined. The 23-year-old is stronger than his pursuers on the ski jump and leads the overall World Cup ahead of the German Vinzenz Geiger.

ALEXANDER BOLZHUNOV: The sporting class of the Russian cross-country skiing hotspur is undisputed. Bolshunov is hard to beat - except in sprints - and is rushing from victory to victory this season. Because Johannes Kläbo from Norway missed many competitions, Bolshunow often lacked a real challenger. In January, the 24-year-old attracted negative attention in Lahti when he rammed his Finnish rival Joni Mäki after a thrilling sprint. “That shows what kind of emotional energy the guy has inside,” said German team boss Peter Schlickenrieder, commenting on the action. “Nevertheless, this is of course not acceptable behavior.”

HALVOR EGNER GRANERUD: Almost out of nowhere, the Norwegian conquered the ski jumping world this season. The passionate runner won the individual World Cup for the first time on November 29th and has followed that up with ten more victories since then. Granerud is leading confidently in the overall World Cup and is therefore the absolute favorite for the individual titles at the World Cup.
