Nordic World Ski Championships 2025: Ultra-modern ski jumps and more fans

The next World Cup host Trondheim has taken an important step towards the title fights in 2025 with the recent opening of the two newly built ski jumps in the Granasen Skisenter there. A delegation from the homeland of cross-country skiing superstar Johannes Høsflot Klæbo recently got a detailed picture of the major event there in Planica.

In two years, the Norwegians not only want to score points with perfect competition venues and smooth organization, but also with full stadiums and crowds on the cross-country ski trails. That wasn't the case in Planica with disappointing spectator numbers. “We have a lofty goal, which is 250.000 fans for the twelve days,” said Trondheim OK boss Age Skinstad zur Austria Press Agency (APA) . The budget was a little more cautious at 220.000. In addition to the paying fans, as is usual in Norway, no entry fee will be charged to spectators who come to the tracks on cross-country skis. In 2011, 300.000 additional fans stormed the World Cup in Oslo.

Apart from the spectator penalty, Skinstad gave the Planica World Cup a good rating. “We learned a lot here. They were well prepared. We saw things that were very good and that we will take with us. We have seen some things that we will try to do differently.” His team gained important insights regarding the ideal process, the necessary additional space and the delicate transport system.

Do combiners get a second competition? Trondheim has also taken up the cause of a concept that is as environmentally friendly and climate-friendly as possible for its second World Cup after 1997. “We want to be the most sustainable World Cup of all time,” emphasized Skinstad. A lot can be learned from the memorable Oslo World Cup.

The Trondheim competition program is not yet complete; it will be approved by the world association FIS in May. It is still unclear whether there will be a second women's combined competition in addition to the normal hill individual. “We have applied for an additional competition, the mass start,” said the OC boss. In addition, a para cross-country skiing competition is to be included in the official program for the first time in the history of the World Cup. There are positive signals from the FIS in this regard, says Skinstad.

The jumps as a showpiece After two years of construction, the two completely newly built ski jumps are already finished. By the time of the World Cup test runs in December in cross-country skiing and in March 2024 in jumping and combined sports, outstanding renovations and new construction on the cross-country ski trails and various buildings should be completed. The investments in the sports facilities total the equivalent of 125 million euros.

For the new World Cup, the organizers can draw on the experiences of some of those responsible for the 1997 World Cup. Others, such as Olympic champion Magnus Krog as World Championships competition director for the combination, are new in office. Other sports greats from the Trondheim area such as Marit Björgen, Anders Bardal and Magnus Moan will act as World Cup ambassadors. Klæbo, Maren Lundby, Halvor Egner Granerud and Co. should ensure another flood of medals for the Norwegian team, which was once again highly successful in Planica.
