Olympia 2026: Big support for Milan and Cortina

The sports daily newspaper Journal of Sport published an IOC poll on Sunday showing 83 percent of Italians supporting the bid. Only four percent are against the project. For comparison: the only opposing candidate, Stockholm, currently has 55 percent supporters and 17 percent opponents in Sweden.

Unlike Stockholm, the Italian application has already received the necessary government guarantees. Sports Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti handed over the documents to the head of the IOC evaluation committee, Octavian Morariu, on Friday. This had the Milan/Cortina d'Ampezzo Olympic project as a project "very, very positive" bezeichnet.

If Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo were awarded the contract for the 2026 Winter Games, the biathlon competitions would take place on South Tyrolean soil in Antholz. Just a few days ago, the IOC evaluation committee visited the competition site in the Antholz Valley and was very impressed.

“There is no favorite yet” Despite the positive signs, Morariu emphasized that at this point there is still no favorite for the Winter Games after next, which will be awarded at the IOC session in June (24th to 26th) in Lausanne. The state guarantees must be officially submitted by April 12th. However, Stockholm could get more time.

"What matters is that we get the answers at a time that allows enough time to analyze them and have them confirmed by the Commission by June 24th," said Morariu: "That is the date that counts."
