Olympia: The South Tyrol share is getting smaller

The Olympic Games begin on February 4th. 118 athletes will compete for Italy in Beijing, 28 of whom come from South Tyrol. Four years ago it was 4 out of 44. Where were places lost? s+ went looking for clues.

In alpine skiing, in which South Tyrol has always been dominant, there will be 3 men and 2 women in Beijing. In Pyeongchang the South Tyrolean share was twice as high. It also plays a role that the men only have 7 quota places left, but if there were 11, like 4 years ago, then only Simon Maurberger would probably have been added, and in the best case, Riccardo Tonetti. 12 years ago in Vancouver there were even 8 South Tyrolean ski men there, one more than the entire contingent this time.

In Nordic skiing, the bloodletting is even greater. Combiner Samuel Costa and ski jumper Jessica Malsiner are the only South Tyrolean Olympic participants. There were 9 South Tyrolean athletes there in Pyeongchang, 4 of which were female ski jumpers, plus one ski jumper, 2 combined athletes and 2 cross-country skiers. The ski cross races will take place without South Tyrolean participation. Four years ago there was a trio from South Tyrol. Artificial track tobogganers with the most South Tyroleans As always, only South Tyroleans will compete for Italy in the artificial track tobogganing. But even there the Pyeongchang quota is not quite achieved. This is because the South Tyroleans have lost a quota place in the doubles and can now only compete with one sled. There are 3 women starting this time, one more than 4 years ago. In total, the tobogganers, with 8 athletes, make up the largest South Tyrolean contingent at the Olympics. He was able to prevail against internal competition. Even without March, there are 3 South Tyroleans in the parallel race, plus Nadya Ochner in the women's race and Omar Visintin in the snowboard cross.

South Tyrol is also well represented in biathlon. As at the last Winter Games, Dorothea Wierer, Federica Sanfilippo, Dominik Windisch and Lukas Hofer are there again this time. Alexia Runggaldier, who was also part of the team in Pyeongchang, has now ended her career. Reverse trend with bob There has only been a trend reversal in bobsleigh. There will be two South Tyroleans there again. South Tyrol was last represented in this sport in 2, when Gerda Weißensteiner won bronze.

In all ice sports combined, South Tyrol has exactly 2 athletes who will compete in Beijing. Both are figure skaters, but one doesn't even compete for Italy. Marco Zandron competes in pair skating for Spain. The other is Daniel Grassl, who definitely has ambitions.

Italy has not qualified in ice hockey, South Tyrol is currently not represented on the international stage in speed skating and therefore of course not at the Olympics. 4 years ago Yvonne Daldossi was still there. Short track also takes place without South Tyrolean participation, as does curling.

It had become common practice for South Tyrol to provide around a third of Italy's participants in the Winter Games. This time the South Tyrolean contribution to the Olympic team has fallen to just under a quarter.
