South Tyroleans at the Olympics: The big final certificate

ALPINE SKIING More could certainly be expected from the great South Tyrolean medal hopes like Dominik Paris or Alex Vinatzer. Vinatzer & Co. would also have expected more in the final team competition. The Olympics were also disappointing for Christof Innerhofer, who failed to finish in two of his three races - just like Vinatzer. However, the young man from Val Gardena could benefit from his experiences at these games in the future. Nadia Delago saved the honor of the local ski aces with her surprising bronze medal.

SportNews grade: 6 BIATHLON A medal was the minimum goal and that was achieved with Dorothea Wierer's bronze medal in the sprint. The woman from Niederrasner fulfilled her dream of an individual Olympic medal. That somewhat obscures the fact that she fell short of expectations in some other competitions. Also worth mentioning is Lukas Hofer's 4th place in the pursuit and Dominik Windisch's 5th place in the mass start. However, there was more in the relay competitions - especially in the men's relay.

ARTISTIC TRACK TOBOGGANING The bronze medal was a relief for Dominik Filehner, after four years ago he had won for 4 thousandths of metal. The young Leon Felderer impressed on his debut with 2th place. Unfortunately, Kevin Fiwickeler tested positive for Corona. This also happened to Dominik during the games. That was very bitter in terms of the team relay. With him you would certainly have had a chance of winning a medal. In the women's category, Andrea Vötter (11th), a South Tyrolean, made it into the top ten, but Verena Hofer (10th) and Nina Zöggeler (13th) are still young and have gained important experience. The doubles Emanuel Rieder/Simon Kainzwaldner missed out on a medal in 15th place, but impressed in the team relay.

SportNews grade: 7 NORDIC COMBINATION & SKI JUMPING There is a lot of catching up to do in all Nordic sports in South Tyrol. There were no cross-country skiers in Beijing, only Jessica Malsiner (ski jumping) and Samuel Costa (Nordic combined) traveled to the Middle Kingdom. For the Wolkensteiner, after a real Corona chaos, it was almost a victory that he was able to be there at all. His preparation was therefore not ideal. In his only individual competition he finished 38th. In the relay, the Azzurri were literally left behind in 9th place. Jessica Malsiner (rank 29) was able to qualify for the second round in the individual ski jumping competition. The young woman from Val Gardena has at least fulfilled her goal - but nothing more. There's a lot missing from the world's best.

FIGURE SKATING Daniel Grassl made a successful Olympic debut. With an outstanding freestyle, Grassl catapulted himself up to 7th place. An outstanding result for the 19-year-old from Meran. He has shown that the future belongs to him, even though the standard in this sport is incredibly high and the competition from Asia seems almost overwhelming. Marco Zandron from Bolzano, who competes for Spain, came 11th in the pair skating.

SportNews grade: 7,5 FREESTYLE Silvia Bertagna was devastated because she fell twice in her flagship discipline, Big Air, and missed the final. In slopestyle, the 35-year-old from Val Gardena made it into the final round of the best 12 freestylers. But here too she couldn't stand a landing. In the end, Bertagna, who suffered a knee injury, took 10th place and thus ensured a conciliatory conclusion. She may have competed in her last major competition in Beijing.

SportNews grade: 5,5

boardercross Omar Visintin ensured the South Tyrolean success story at these games. The Algunder had to struggle with his elbow for a long time after his fall in December and ultimately won bronze in the individual and silver in the mixed competition in Beijing. He almost won gold, but his partner Michela Moioli couldn't save her lead to the finish.

SportNews grade: 9 Parallel snowboard The fact that parallel snowboarders are only allowed to compete in one race at the Olympics is actually a joke. The chances of winning a medal are correspondingly low. Roland Filehner was unable to fulfill his dream of a medal with fourth place. In the small final he was eliminated shortly before the finish. Daniele Bagozza (4th) and Edwin Coratti (15th) certainly fell short of expectations. Nadya Ochner at least fulfilled her target in 17th place.

SportNews grade: 6 BOB In the two-man bobsleigh, things didn't go as planned for Patrick Baumgartner on his Olympic debut (21st place). The 27-year-old from Issing only showed his talent in the fourth round of the four-man bobsleigh, when he advanced to 4th place with the fourth-best running time. So the appearance in the four-man bobsleigh, which also included Alex Verginer from St. Martin in Thurn, can definitely be classified as successful.
