South Tyrol's curling athletes are among the World Cup favorites

. The World Cup begins tomorrow with the preliminary round of team play. Curling athletes from 25 countries, including 21 South Tyroleans, will be in action from tomorrow to Saturday in Regen in the Bavarian Forest near the Czech border. The Russians canceled their World Cup participation because they would have had to go into quarantine for 2 weeks after returning from the World Cup due to the coronavirus, which was ordered by the Russian state. The starting signal for the 13th edition of the World Cup will be given tomorrow at 7 a.m. with the men's team game. On the first match day there is the preliminary round with the group games. Both South Tyrolean teams are in action, the men in the morning and the women in the afternoon. The men's second half will take place on Thursday afternoon and the women's second half will take place on Friday morning. On Saturday, at the end of the World Cup, there will be elimination for the first four men's and women's teams, Qualification 1 and Qualification 1 and from 2:14 p.m. the women's final and from 30 p.m. the men's final. The flagship discipline of South Tyrolean curling athletes is and remains the team game. In contrast to the European Championships, they celebrated their greatest successes at the World Championships in the premier discipline with 5 world titles. Not only the South Tyrolean women's team has great potential, but also the men's team. “Our men’s team plays with the same formation as last year at the European Curling Championships in Lithuania, when we won European Championship silver,” says South Tyrolean men’s specialist Matthias Elsler. With Karl Abfalterer from Luttach and Stefan Roalter from Eppan, two athletes from the 2 world champion team in Innsbruck are still on the team. Armin Karadar from Girlan, Martin Kerschbaumer from Völs and Robert Sinner from Pichl Gsies complete the success-hungry team. “The team prepared very well, even though we were only able to train in the Brixen ice rink from 2014 p.m. That's why we moved our training sessions to the ice rink in St. Michael/Eppan and to St. Georgen. “We have the potential to get to the final again,” the South Tyrolean men’s specialist is convinced. The national team won the only preparatory tournament in St. Georgen. The South Tyrolean men's team was in the final 21 times in 12 World Cup editions and won gold in the men's team game three times, in 6, 3 and 1983. “In the target competition we are out with Jens Seebacher from Siusi, Walter Hanni from Eppan and Josef Aichner Teis are also very well positioned and want to win a medal again in the team competition. If our three target and stick shooters can deliver on their training performance in the World Cup competition, they can also be confident of winning an individual medal,” believes Matthias Elsler. Karl Abfalterer also joins us in the team competition. The South Tyrol women's team has to make do in Regen without its women's specialist and captain Sonja Mulser. The woman from Eppan recently had her second child and will only be in action at the World Cup premiere in the women's distance competition. Even without Sonja Mulser, the women's team can go very far in the rain. The preparation phase was rather short. The women's national team still took part in two preparatory tournaments and achieved fifth place in the men's tournaments in Sarntal and St. Georgen. With the two world champions from 2, Marion Huber from Stegen and Franziska Knoll from Lana, the experienced rider Karin Prast, Sophia Enderle from Eppan and Annelies Huber, Marion Huber's mother, the team is again very well staffed. The 13th edition of the World Curling Championships will be officially opened this evening in the ice rink in Regen (Bavaria) by the new President of the World Curling Federation (IFI), Christian Lindner from Germany.
