For the first time: Telemark World Cup comes to South Tyrol

For the first time, the world's best athletes in this fascinating sport will be taking part in a World Cup in the northernmost region of Italy on Wednesday, January 18th and Thursday, January 19th. A month ago, Carezza once again impressed as the venue for the Snowboard World Cup. A good month later, there will be another race for World Cup points below the Rosengarten, but not on the board, but with telemark skis. The telemarkers will be in use on the Masarè piste and therefore on the opposite slope to the Pra-Di-Tori piste. A sprint for men and women will be held both on January 18th and one day later. Around 70 athletes are expected in Eggental. A South Tyrolean telemarker will also be included Raphael Mahlknecht (Völs am Schlern), who has tried hard to win the home World Cup in recent weeks. “I am happy to be able to drive my first home race in the World Cup in Carezza. For me, this is one of the greatest gifts ever, being at home in the Dolomites,” says the 21-year-old from the Val Gardena Ski Club, who achieved ten top ten results in 45 World Cup races and finished fourth in March last year missed his first podium. Mahlknecht celebrated his greatest success to date in March 2022 when he won the bronze medal in the parallel sprint at the Junior World Championships in Mürren (Switzerland). The most successful FIS athlete is a telemarker All telemark fans can also look forward to the most successful FIS athlete next week. The Swiss Amélie Wenger-Reymond has won no less than 158 World Cup races in telemark, became world champion 20 times and has a whopping 44 crystal balls in her trophy cabinet (eleven of them for the overall World Cup). The 35-year-old recently trained on the Karerpass and was already able to see for herself the optimal snow conditions in South Tyrol. In the Carezza ski area, people are already looking forward to the Telemark World Cup premiere. “Raphael Mahlknecht recently contacted us and asked whether we would be willing to step in as a World Cup venue. After a few phone calls with potential volunteers and some partners, it was immediately clear to us that we were on board. We are pleased to be able to support the large FIS family in a perhaps slightly less well-known but certainly no less attractive sport such as telemarking,” explains Florian Eisath, Managing Director of Carezza Dolomites, in conclusion.

One man's sorrow is another man's joy: Because there is not enough snow in Gerardmer, the start of this year's FIS Telemark World Cup in France had to be canceled. Carezza steps in at short notice as a stage location and ensures a premiere.
