Alex Trivellato: “The disappointment is huge”

With two exceptions, the Eisbären Berlin have always been crowned German ice hockey champions in the past nine years. Now, of all times, when Alex Trivellato has fought his way into the first team of the series champions, there is a lot of gloom in the federal capital. The 21-year-old from Leifers has gained a foothold in the DEL, but he couldn't prevent the Eisbären from unexpectedly early failure. In the interview below, Trivellato takes stock.

Did you expect the season to end for you in mid-March?

“The disappointment is huge, no question. Nobody in Berlin speculated on such an early failure. But you have to admit that Ingolstadt simply played better and ultimately deserved to move into the next round.”

As disappointing as the season was for the Eisbären, their debut season in the DEL was all the more convincing. How do you rate your debut?

“My goal was to play my way into the limelight and collect as much playing time as possible. I managed this very well for a long time. However, I can’t be really happy because of the early end to the season.”

In what areas have you particularly developed further this season?

“I learned a lot, especially when it came to defensive behavior. I now have more assertiveness in duels on the boards and have also learned to react much more quickly on the ice. The extremely high pace of the game forces this.”

With DEG player Fabian Calovi and Schwenningen coach Stefan Mair, two other South Tyroleans are active in the top German league. What is your relationship to each other?

“It's nice every now and then to communicate in the South Tyrolean dialect after the games. (laughs) I've known Fabian for years now, we get along very well. I wasn't in contact with Stefan at all before this season. I am very proud that a coach from my hometown made it to the DEL. I’m already looking forward to meeting both of them again next season.”

Have you already packed your holiday suitcase?

“No, unfortunately the holidays will have to wait a little longer. First I want to finish my year of study. In the meantime, I try to stay fit with daily exercise. My big goal is to take part in the World Cup with Italy. Nobody from the association has contacted me recently, but I hope that I will be included in the tournament squad.”

Let's take a look at domestic ice hockey. Did you expect HC Bozen to have such a successful debut in the EBEL?

“HCB is having an outstanding season. I always keep myself up to date and am incredibly happy about the successes this team is achieving. In my opinion, there are no longer any upper limits. Huge milestones were set with qualifying for the Champions League and the quarter-final win against Fehervar, so why shouldn’t we also be able to dream of the title?”

Who will ultimately be at the top of Elite.A?

“I have followed the Italian league a little less in the last few weeks. But I think that HC Pustertal meets all the criteria this season to finally snatch the title.”
