Alex Trivellato: A polar bear from South Tyrol

The 20-year-old defender seems to have good cards with Berlin's new head coach, Jeff Tomlinson. The 43-year-old Canadian kept his word when he announced that he wanted to integrate young players from his own youth ranks. But the fact that Trivellato has good prospects of being promoted to the core squad of the record champions is not just due to his talent. Because after the season that brought the seventh title, two defenses from North America were said goodbye. A third, the German national player Constantin Braun, unexpectedly had to seek medical treatment for depression.

“A great opportunity”

The remaining trio from the championship squad was supplemented by the North Americans Casey Borer and Shawn Lalonde. With Jim Sharrow and the national players Frank Hördler and Jens Baxmann, there are currently five defensive specialists. Clearly not enough to get through a long playing time with over 60 compulsory encounters.

“Yes, I know, this is a great opportunity for me. And I will give everything to fight for a place in the team," explains Trivellato. He spent three weeks of summer vacation at home in Laives, with his parents and with friends in Turin.

An uncle once took him to ice hockey in Bolzano when he was five years old. This turned into a passion for ice hockey that even the king of football couldn't match. At 16, he moved to Kaufbeuren with the goal of a professional career and caught the eye of the Eisbären's talent scouts. So he came to the Spree in 2010, played for the Eisbären Juniors, in the DNL youth league, and for the cooperation partner FASS Berlin in the Oberliga (third highest category). He was also called up to the U18 and U20 squads for Italy and was invited by national coach Tom Pokel to prepare for the Sochi 2014 Olympic qualification.

“Of course happy”

When the Eisbären offered him to wear their jersey for an initial two years shortly before the start of training for the 2013/14 season, he was “of course happy”. Because that was his first contract as a professional and a big step towards becoming a professional ice hockey player with prospects National team, World Cup and Olympics.

What makes the difference between the requirements in a U20 team or in the German top league and what is required in the DEL championship team or in the Euro Trophy? – “It’s faster and more aggressive. Must grasp the situation more quickly and act more quickly. And the understanding of the game among teammates and opponents is generally much stronger," says the young South Tyrolean.

At 1,86 m and 83 kg, he has the physical ability to compete in duels with national players, World Cup and Olympic starters. Fear of injury? - "No. I've been there since I was little. "I had a muscle injury in my thigh and a bruise near the disc, but nothing else."

The determined and independent athlete didn't just spend his time in the German capital sweating in the weight room or on the ice rink. He will soon be completing his extensive training as a wholesale and foreign trade merchant at the Karlshorst University of Applied Sciences.

He also looks after his 15-year-old brother David. He has been using the opportunity for parallel development - ice hockey and boarding school/school at the sports high school - with the Eisbären for a year and would like to become an ice hockey professional like Alex.

By the way, if, contrary to expectations, the awarding of the foreigner's license at the EHC does not work, Alex can prove his talent on loan to the second Bundesliga club Dresdner Eislöwen. The fact that he has a lot of it is underlined by his pre-nomination for a draft in the world's best ice hockey league, the NHL in North America.
