The Broncos let Ritten celebrate

The Wipptal Broncos defeated Fassa 3-2 in overtime and thus decisively slowed down the Trentino team in the fight for the semi-final places in the Italian championship. The beneficiaries are the Rittner Buam, who lost to Cortina 0-4, but still secured the fourth and final semi-final place early. They cannot now be caught by Fassa, Val Gardena or Vipiteno. So HC Pustertal, Asiago, Cortina and Ritten will fight for a final ticket at the end of January. The semi-final pairings are still unclear due to the remaining games.

In the Ritten Arena, the Buam clearly set the tone in the starting third, but failed to score the deserved opening goal. Then the Cortina avalanche broke over goalkeeper Hannes Tretreibenreif and his teammates. Chad Pietroniro (1 goal) and his brother Phil (2) gave the guests a 3-0 lead in the middle period. Luke Cavallin then took over from Trebenreif and remained undefeated. When he made way for a sixth field player in the final phase, Giftopoulos scored to make the final score 4-0. Gander and Gooch secure two points In the Vipiteno Weihenstephan Arena, Wipptal and Fassa played a balanced, low-level game at times, but from the first break there was no lack of scoring opportunities. In the 27th minute, Daniel Tedesco used a double power play to give the guests the lead for the first time Last-minute new signing Gregorio Gios from HC Bozen promptly debuted. The 1-0 only lasted a minute before Markus Gander used a rebound to equalize. The Vipiteno striker almost struck again shortly afterwards, but - like his later teammate Trevor Gooch - failed at the goal post. In the final section, Gander was able to celebrate a second time: after a Bernard shot, he held out his stick and steered the disc into the net to make it 2-1.

But it wasn't enough for the threesome, because in the 52nd minute the strong Daniel Tedesco appeared again. The former Kalter player sent both teams into overtime with the goal to make it 2-2. This was exactly 123 seconds old when Gooch stormed alone towards the visitors' goal and secured the extra point for the Broncos with a dry finish. It was Vipiteno's second victory in the second duel with Fassa within 48 hours.

Later in the evening, HC Pustertal won 3-2 after extra time against Kitzbühel, while HC Gröden had no chance against Olimpija Ljubljana at 0-5 ( see own report ). The Rittner Buam lost quietly against Cortina on Epiphany - and yet they were the last team to qualify for the semi-finals of Serie A. The reason for this was their league rivals from Vipiteno.
