The Buam win the South Tyrol derby

At the start of the Alps Hockey League, South Tyrolean ice hockey fans were immediately able to look forward to a derby with the highest explosiveness. The Broncos met the Rittner Buam in the Weihenstephan Arena. Both teams have playoff ambitions, and the Rittners were the better team on Saturday evening. But the Wipptalers showed great fighting spirit. Symbolically, Markus Gander bravely threw himself into a hammering shot from Marco Insam in the first few minutes and limped off the ice, injured. HC Gherdëina also solved the first task of the new season against the Black Wings Linz.

Both teams struggled to get going in the opening third. The teams met each other with a lot of physical exertion and some minor scuffles. However, there was a lot left to be desired in terms of play in Vipiteno. In the end, it was the young newcomer Derek Gentile who first stabbed the hearts of Broncos fans. The Canadian received a pass from Michael Lang during a counterattack and scored to make it 1-0 for Ritten (10.27).

As uneventful as the first third was otherwise, the players were just as fiery in the second. A little carelessness by Wipptal goalkeeper Jakob Rabanser gave the Rittner the 2-0 lead shortly after the restart (25.28:XNUMX). Somehow the puck slipped under Rabanser's pads, a setback for the Wipptalers, who had held the reins in the second third so far.

The Vipiteno team immediately got back up and scored their first goal of the new season a little later. Fabian Hackhofer passed the ball across the entire ice to Joseph Mizzi, who coolly slotted the ball past Hayden Hawkey to make it 2-1 (27.26). What followed was a pressure phase from the Rittners with a lot of power play time, in which the Buam pulled away with goals from the great Gentile (30.35) and Kevin Fink (33.11). Deservedly, because the Buam were more compelling and always one step faster than their opponents.

The third third started slowly. The Broncos initially showed little initiative for a possible catch-up. But after 10 minutes the glimmer of hope came in the power play. After a shot by Paul Eisendle, the puck remained in front of Hawkey and Davide Conci scored to make it 2:4. The first step would be taken and the Broncos would get better and better. The fact that the Rittner left the ice rink victorious was mainly due to the confident Hawkey, who repeatedly put an end to the Wipptaler's attacks. Nothing came of the catch-up and the game ended with 4:2 and a victory for the Rittner Buam. The Fury triumphs at home In the parallel game, HC Gherdëina also celebrated a win at the start of the season over Black Wings Linz. From the start, the people of Val Gardena showed good ice hockey with a lot of momentum and the necessary move to the goal. After just five minutes, the Furies' commitment was rewarded with a goal. Matteo Luisetti got on the scoresheet with an irresistible feint after passes from Yuri Cristellon and Samuel Moroder, giving Val Gardena a 1-0 lead. What followed was a game of equals with chances on both sides. Patrick Söllinger took advantage of one of these and scored after a remarkable pass from Marc Andre Dorion to equalize 1-1 for Linz.

The Furie continued their strong form in the second third, but missed numerous opportunities to take the lead again, especially in the power play. But the fans in Pranives were able to cheer again in the 26th minute. After a counterattack, Brad McGowan assisted Max Oberrauch, who was lurking in front of the goal, who didn't need to be asked twice and caught Leonhard Sommer between the braces in the Linz goal. The remaining third again showed a balanced game. Colin Furlong always defended Linz's attacks safely and Samuel Moroder narrowly failed to take the 3-1 lead - 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Michael Sullmann then sealed the victory with his 3-1 score shortly before the end. HC Gherdëina won its opening game and is at the top of the table together with Salzburg, Jesenice, Zell am See and Ritten. The other South Tyrolean teams from Meran and the Unterland will not take part in the game until next weekend.
