The stadium accident in Vipiteno shocked the ice hockey scene in South Tyrol and far beyond. It is not the first time that an arena in South Tyrol has fallen victim to the forces of nature.

When a mudslide destroyed the stadium in St. Ulrich on June 9, 1999, not only one of the most traditional sports venues in South Tyrol was irretrievably destroyed in one fell swoop. Since its construction in 1968, the stadium at the foot of the Alpe di Siusi has been the scene of numerous battles that have gone down in the annals of South Tyrolean sport.
