Asiago defeats Pustertal 6:3 and equalizes in the best-of-seven series

Rob Sirianni and captain Thomas Pichler, for whom the season has already ended, were missing from Pustertal. Taggart Desmet was also eliminated in the 5th minute due to a shoulder injury. Asiago, however, had to make do without injured striker Matteo Tessari.

The home team looked much fresher and livelier today compared to the last games and had two good chances to score with Adam Henrich, which Puster goalkeeper Mikko Strömberg was able to fend off. In the 10.10 minute, Layne Ulmer gave Asiago the lead: Matt De Marchi initiated the counterattack with a through pass, Ulmer completed it with a powerful shot between Strömberg's leg pads to make it 1-0. Four minutes later, Armin Helfer equalized with a long-range shot. For the national team defender it was the third goal in the play-off final against Asiago. The “Wolves” joy lasted just 44 seconds until John Vigilante put the home team in the lead again. Shortly before the third break, Michael Henrich even increased the score to 3-1 thanks to a pass from young Michele Stevan.

The middle third began with HC Pustertal on the attack looking for the next goal. In the 29.23 minute Kelly played Joe Cullen free, but the outstanding Daniel Bellissimo saved his shot with a world-class save. Asiago took advantage of every opportunity on the other side and scored in the 32.40 minute with Michael Henrich to make it 4-1. The 31-year-old Canadian used a millimeter-precise pass from Intranuovo and celebrated his 35th goal in this championship, the 13th in the play-off. In the 38.22 minute the bell rang for the fifth time in Strömberg's box. John Vigilante made it 5-1, his second goal of the evening.

The encounter seemed to be over, but Pustertal showed a reaction and reduced the score to 17:3 at the beginning of the final third with Patrick Bona outnumbered (Cullen was in the penalty box) and the 5-year-old Alex Frei from Farm Team Kaltern. Suddenly things became exciting again. Three minutes before the final siren, Stefan Mair took goalkeeper Strömberg off the ice for a sixth skater, but was unable to turn the game around. Asiago finally closed the bag in the 37.50 minute. First Nick Plastino hit the post, then Adam Henrich scored the 6:3 into the Pusterers' empty goal.

The next final game will take place on Thursday, March 31st at 20.30:6 p.m. in Brunico. Game XNUMX will then be played again on Saturday in Asiago.
