Asiago dethrones the Rittner Buam

Around 3.000 spectators transformed the Odegar Stadium into a veritable cauldron and thus provided a worthy setting for the all-important final. Both teams tackled this slightly handicapped. At Ritten, the ailing Ruben Rampazzo only sat on the bench, while Justin DiBenedetto had to sit in the stands as a surplus transfer card player. Asiago competed without the injured Enrico Miglioranzi, but new father Sean Bentivoglio was back in the game.

The Italian-Canadian was promptly involved in Asiago's opening goal after five minutes of play. After a pass from him, Stefano Marchetti hammered the target onto the goal. Layne Ulmer steered it into the goal. Asiago continued to push and increased the score to 13-2 in the 0th minute. This time it was Kevin DeVergilio who gave a shot the decisive change of direction and defeated Ritten goalie Weinhandl for the second time.

Ritten strikes back twice

Now the guests showed a reaction. They took advantage of a double power situation to reduce the score to 1:2 with a powerful shot from Ingemar Gruber. Just 33 seconds later, the Buam scored again: Gruber pushed the disc to Ritten's top scorer Eric Johansson, who made it 2-2. At this point, Raymond's protégés were still on the power play. At the end of the first third the game was completely open again.

After the restart, an open exchange of blows developed in which both teams came close to scoring the third goal several times. At Ritten, Tudin initially missed a top-class opportunity, after which Weinhandl took center stage on several occasions. Although Asiago now pushed vehemently into the opponent's third, he was able to distinguish himself several times against Bentivoglio, Benetti and Co. Even when Asiago was allowed to try the power play twice, the Ritten goalkeeper held tight at the back. So it went into the second break with a draw.

The boom is running out of air

In the final third, both teams were tense. Hectic pace and heated tempers on both sides initially prevented an orderly build-up to the game. It wasn't until Christian Borgatello had to go into the cooler in the 48th minute that Asiago took control of the game again. The “Stellati” made perfect use of the outnumbered situation: Marchetti once again shot from a distance and the target floundered in the net again. This time captain Dave Borrelli crossed the path of the shot and made a decisive deflection. De Vergilio then had two chances to increase the score to 4:2.

In the last ten minutes, Ritten threw everything forward and allowed Asiago to repeatedly launch dangerous counterattacks. The South Tyroleans remained unlucky in the end - especially Gruber, whose powerful shot from the blue line failed to hit the inside post. Shortly before the end, Raymond Weinhandl took a skater off the ice for a sixth, but instead of the hoped-for equalizer, Asiago's fourth goal came. De Vergilio hit the empty goal with 67 seconds left. The Rittner Buam were defeated and their title defense failed.

The regular season winner from Veneto won the memorable final series of the highest Italian ice hockey league in the seventh match. The reigning champions from Ritten had to admit defeat 2:4 at the end of a thrilling game.
