Brian and Mark McCutcheon are extending their contract with HC Bozen

Brian Kenneth McCutcheon, born on August 3, 1949, came to Bolzano in March and acted as assistant to coach Adolf Insam in the season finale. After he then contributed to winning the 19th Italian championship title, the HCB has now given him a contract as head coach for the coming season.

Due to his career, McCutcheon is not only a colorful personality at HC Bozen, but is undoubtedly an enrichment for the entire Italian ice hockey. After the Canadian completed his science studies at Cornell University, he played for the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL and AHL from 1971 to 1979. He then moved to Europe for the first time, where he joined ATSE Graz. Due to a serious knee injury, his playing career came to an abrupt end.

The Foxes' new coach then pursued a career as a coach. Until 1995 he worked in university ice hockey at Elmira (1980-1987) and Cornell (1987-1995). At Big Red Cornell, he mentored no fewer than 22 future NHL players.

He then tried his hand as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Ice Dogs in the IHL before moving to the Columbus Chill as head coach in the ECHL, with whom he set a new points record. This earned him the honor of “Coach of the Year” in the ECHL.

In 1997, McCutcheon made his AHL debut with the Rochester Americans, a Buffalo Sabers farm team. The three-year interlude in the second highest division in North America was crowned with great success: in 1999 and 2000 he reached the final of the Calder Cup. Despite two final defeats, he was named “Coach of the Year” in each case.

The now 62-year-old then took the big career leap and joined the coaching staff of the Buffalo Sabres. From 2000 to 2011 he worked in the best league in the world as an assistant coach and later as an associate coach. With the NHL team from New York State, he reached the Eastern Conference finals in 2006 and 2007 and won the President's Trophy. With McCutcheon on the coaching staff, the Sabers reached the playoffs seven times.

Mark McCutcheon continues to storm in Bolzano Brian McCutcheon's commitment also includes the contract extension of his son Mark, who was also involved in Bolzano last season. The striker had 51 points in 30 games.

The 28-year-old began his career in a youth league in Ontario in 2000, and spent the following two seasons in the Eastern Junior Hockey League. In the summer of 2003 he moved to Cronell University and made his NCAA debut a short time later. In the same year he was drafted by the NHL club Colorado Avalanche in the fifth round as the 146th player. However, McCutcheon continued his career in the NCAA college league, where he and his teammates secured the title in the second of his four seasons (2004/05).

In 2007, the American made the jump to the AHL for the Lake Erie Monsters for the first time. In his second season with Lake Erie, he also played for the Johnstown Chiefs in the ECHL. In the following season, McCutcheon also shuttled between these two divisions, playing primarily in the ECHL for the Idaho Steelheads. In the higher-class American Hockey League he played for both the Portland Pirates and the Manitoba Moose.

Two years ago, Mark McCutcheon turned his back on the USA for the first time, after 58 games and 68 points in the ECHL and 145 appearances (28 points) in the AHL, and signed a contract with the Norwegian first division club Vålerenga.

The 27-year-old striker played in 16 championship games (eleven goals, twelve assists) and eight games in the Europa League (five goals, three assists) for the Scandinavians before he received a contract with the DEG Metro Stars. At the DEL club he was used as a defensive center and collected a total of eight scorer points in 42 games.

Brian and Mark McCutcheon are extending their contract with HC Bozen

The HC Bozen club management has reached an agreement with Brian McCutcheon to extend their cooperation. The 63-year-old ice hockey expert will take on the role of head coach and at the same time bring his son Mark with him to Bolzano.
