Brits cancel entire ice hockey season – the consequences

The early end of the season in the British EIHL has been apparent for weeks. The clubs had put their plans on hold for a long time, and a number of players “escaped” to other leagues. For example, HC Bozen ( Gleason Fournier ), the HC Pustertal ( Stephen Lee , Brett Perlini ) and Cortina (Mike Cazzola) seized the opportunity and caught cracks from the EIHL. It is now clear that there will be no ice hockey played in the British House of Lords this year. A mini-season in the spring with a handful of teams is not ruled out, but is considered extremely unlikely. “We need a stadium capacity of 75 to 100%” EIHL boss Tony Smith League boss Tony Smith explains the decision as follows: “In normal years, we have stadium occupancy of 75 to 100% across the league, and we need this to be able to do business. That's not realistic at the moment." The start of the season had originally been postponed to December 5th, but since no significant improvement in the Corona situation in Great Britain is expected by then, those responsible were now forced to act. New flood of players on the transfer market? The EIHL exit also has an impact on the Champions Hockey League. The Cardiff Devils have to cancel their participation, but the traditional Swedish club Färjestad is moving up. The consequences of the loss of the season will also have an impact on the transfer market, as additional players from Great Britain - especially the many Canadians in the island league - will be looking for new employers. These include some players who have already been active in this country in the past, such as Patrick Killeen, Marc-Oliver Vallerand, Sean Bentivoglio, Matt Pope and Sean McMonagle. The latter in particular is likely to be on the radar of many a club in Italy, not least because of his status as a dual citizen and national player for several years.
