Continental Cup: Bolzano starts with a 3-2 win against Herning

Herning got off to a dream start against the White-Reds and took the lead after just 40 seconds. HCB captain Alexander Egger sat in the penalty box, the Danes won the face-off in the attacking third, the puck went to Lasse Lassen, who scored from the blue line to make it 1-0. After this cold shower, the people of Bolzano got into the game better, but were never really dangerous because Herning stood securely in defense. Christian Walcher and Enrico Dorigatti had the record champions' best chances shortly before the first break, but both were denied by Lubor Pisar. In the 19.45 minute, the visiting goalkeeper saved his team's narrow lead when he made a brilliant save to fend off a shot from Marco Insam.

The middle third began with the home team's equalizer. After wonderful preparatory work by MacGregor Sharp, Ryan Flynn defeated Dubar with a hammer shot. Bozen then shifted gears and put Herning under a lot of pressure. Sharp and twice Dorigatti missed three great opportunities to take the lead and after forty minutes the score remained 1-1.

At the beginning of the final third, MacGregor Sharp decided the match in just 139 seconds: first he deflected a shot from Hjalmarsson in the power play (Gunnarsson was in the penalty box) unstoppable for Pisar, then he made it 3-1 with a goal. Bolzano let up a little after this double pack and Herning made the encounter exciting again when Joachim Linnett reduced the score to 2:3 eight minutes before the end of the game (Pergine loan player Troy Barnes had to leave the ice). Mark McCutcheon could have made everything clear straight away, but was denied by Pisar on the counterattack. Duba finally saved his team with a brilliant save on Rehus. That's how it stayed with Bolzano's 3-2 win.

Brian McCutcheon (Coach HC Bozen): “I noticed during the preparation that my boys were excited about this tournament in front of their home crowd. Unfortunately, this turned into nervousness at the start of the game. At first we couldn't play our usual game, although things clearly got better as the match progressed. We put in a good performance, especially in the power play. I have complete confidence in the players and am convinced that we will also do a good job against Landshut, even though the Germans are at least as strong as Herning.”

Todd Bjorkstrand (Trainer Herning Blue Fox): “Bolzano has a very strong team with good individual players who play at a high pace and only allow a few chances. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to skilfully exploit our quick lead. We didn't get into duels anymore. In the end, these little details made the difference.”
