Continental Cup: Ritten celebrates opening victory in the penalty shootout

The Italian champions were able to rely on their entire squad in the important opening game of the cup. Coach Janne Saavalainen also had Bozen loanee Ivan Tauferer at his disposal. The beefy defensive player formed the third defensive block with Marco Marzolini.

Boom with a dream start The home team got off to a dream start and took the lead after just 28 seconds with defender Ryan Obuchowski making it 1-0 with a powerful shot. In the eighth minute, Tauferer and Aljaz Chvatal had a boxing attack and both had to go to the penalty box for 2+2+10 minutes. Afterwards nothing more happened until the 13th minute, when Julian Kostner was completely alone on the counterattack and failed in front of Laibach goalkeeper Zan Us. A little later, Markus Spinell also presented himself in front of Us, but the Slovenian goalie could not be defeated. So after the first 20 minutes, Buam remained in a fair 1-0 lead.

The AHL champion from Laibach came out of the locker room transformed. First Aljaz Chvatal bit his teeth on Ritten's number 1, Kevin Lindskoug, then Janez Orehek and Miha Logar also got stuck on the Swedish goalie. Less than 60 seconds had been played in the final third when a long-range shot from Zan Jezovsek just grazed the edge of the goal. Both Ritten and Laibach didn't want to risk anything anymore, and shortly before the end of the game a shot from Matt Lane whizzed just past the Slovenian goal. So this exciting encounter went into extra time. Deserved extra point Ritten dominated overtime and had two great chances to score the winning goal with Andreas Lutz and Alex Frei, but the Laibach defense somehow held firm. So the penalty shootout had to produce a winner. There the Italian champions once again had the better end for themselves: Simon Kostner and Matt Lane scored for Buam, only Mark Cepon was successful for Laibach. Ritten got the important extra point. Goalscorer Ryan Obuchowski was voted Man of the Match and played a very strong game.

With this victory, Ritten climbs to second place in the table behind Ferencvarosi TC. The Hungarians had Txuri Urdin San Sebastian clear in the afternoon defeated 6-0 . On Saturday against San Sebastian On Saturday evening at 20 p.m. there will be a duel between the Italian champions and the Spaniards from San Sebastian in Klobenstein. Laibach, on the other hand, will face Ferencvarosi at 16 p.m. With another win, Ritten could take a giant leap towards the semi-finals. Only the first place player advances to a round.

Continental Cup: Ritten celebrates opening victory in the penalty shootout

The Rittner Buam made a perfect debut in the second round of the Continental Cup on Friday evening. In the home hall in Klobenstein, the Italian champions narrowly defeated their Slovenian AHL league rival Laibach after a penalty shootout in front of over 1.000 spectators.
