Continental Cup: Ritten celebrates after penalty shootout

The Rittners had to do without the injured Andreas Alber and Kevin Fink in the important opening game of the cup, but coach Riku Lehtonen had defender Brad Cole available. The game started with a huge chance for Rittner. Simon Kostner intercepted the puck from a Kazakh defender, but then failed alone in front of guest goalie Adam Svoboda. Shortly afterwards, Kostner had to go to the penalty box for two minutes. The Kazakhs coldly took advantage of this situation of superiority. Maxim Korobov spotted the unmarked Albert Vishyakov, who gave Killeen the loss with a powerful shot.

But Ritten didn't give up and equalized just two minutes later. Brad Cole, who already played the semi-finals with the “Buam” in mid-November, scored on a pass from Simon Kostner to make it 1-1. Things got even better for the home team in the 18th minute: in the power play (Gavrilychev was in the penalty box), Thomas Spinell scored the 2-1 lead from a tight angle. Here the 26-year-old could thank Fabian Ebner, who served him excellently.

Both teams had good chances in the middle third, but both goalkeepers outgrew themselves and the Italian champions remained narrowly 40-2 ahead after 1 minutes. In the final third, the Kazakhs relied fully on the offensive, but the Rittner defense was solid. In the 50th minute, Tommaso Traversa and Dan Tudin missed two good opportunities to make it 3-1. Six minutes before the end of the game, Atyrau managed to score a well-deserved equalizer. Alexander Zhurun, who was left alone, scored on a pass from Dimitri Stepanov to make the score 2-2.

The game went into extra time. In the 63rd minute, the home side were extremely unlucky when Victor Ahlström hit the post. Two minutes later, Christian Borgatello had to go to the penalty box. However, Atyrau could not use the power play and so the match had to be decided in a penalty shootout.

Victor Ahlström and Janis Sprukts scored for the home team, while Patrick Killeen was able to defuse all of the Kazakhs' shots.

Tomorrow at 19 p.m. there will be a duel between the Italian champions Ritten and the Danish cup winners Odense Bulldogs in Klobenstein. Before that, at 15 p.m., Beibarys Atyrau meets the Nottingham Panthers.

The Rittner Buam made a perfect debut at the Continental Cup final on Friday evening. In the home hall in Klobenstein, the Italian champion defeated the Kazakh champion Beibarys Atyrau after a high-class and even match with 3-2 goals after a penalty shootout.
