The CHL miracle in Bolzano: Foxes beat Turku 4:2

The game began for HCB Südtirol with an ice-cold shower in front of a loud crowd. Not in the form of an Ice Bucket Challenge, but by conceding a goal after just 83 seconds. The 17-year-old talent Mikko Rantanen was in the right place after a nice pass from Radek Smolanek and just had to hold out the stick. And things got even worse for the home team, because in the fifth minute of the game Smolanek did everything himself and gave Jaroslav Hübl the disadvantage for the second time that evening. Everything pointed to a rejection like the first match in Finland - but everything turned out completely differently.

Because the people of Bolzano didn't give up. They then pushed for the first CHL goal in the history of the Italian record champions and reigning EBEL champions. After a total of 132 minutes and 46 seconds the time had come: Anton Bernard, served by Hannes Oberdörfer, outplayed the entire Turkus defense and in the end also lost out to goalie Lassila with a precise shot into the top corner. But that wasn't enough, because just four and a half minutes later the attacker from Kaltern even equalized. Within less than five minutes, the home team were back in the game thanks to Bernard's stroke of genius. Now the ice wave was really bubbling, but no more goals were scored until the first siren sounded.

After the break, HCB Südtirol played with a lot of self-confidence and had several good opportunities in the majority. The Foxes came very close to scoring a third goal thanks to Bernard and Pance, to the delight of the loud fans in the ice wave, but Lassila kept underlining what an outstanding goalie he is. In the 33rd minute, the guests from Scandinavia had the 3-2 on display when captain Egger Smolanek rudely stopped and the referees decided on a penalty. But Smolanek fired the puck over the goal guarded by Hübl, and the stalemate remained. Bolzano then had a very slight advantage and the score remained 40-2 after 2 minutes.

In the final third, both teams initially took little risk. A preliminary decision was made in the 54th minute by Marco Insam, who gave the Foxes the lead for the first time with a wonderful shot. The die was finally cast with 40 seconds left when Ziga Pance crowned his good performance with a goal to make it 4-2 into the Finns' empty goal. Bozen thus rehabilitated itself for the disgrace suffered two weeks ago - and caused a small ice hockey miracle.
