The team of national coach Marco Sturm prevailed in the play-off in Pyeongchang against arch-rivals Switzerland 2-1 (1-0, 0-1, 0-0, 1-0) after a tough fight and extra time, despite leading player Christian Ehrhoff was badly fouled after just a few seconds. "I'm feeling good again. A win like this makes it easier. It was a good team performance today," said Ehrhoff. "Of course you always want to be the hero in overtime. But it wasn't that easy. Pföderl used the following advantage to score the opening goal, with active support from former NHL goalkeeper Jonas Hiller, who let the puck slip through the pads. Pföderl replaced his Nuremberg club colleague Patrick Reimer. The DEL record goalscorer was missing, as was Mannheim defender Sinan Akdag, who also received a check to the head in the 2-1 penalty shootout against Norway. Ehrhoff returned to the ice at the start of the second period. Danny from the Birches was in the goal again. The Munich master goalie, who was still an uncertain factor at last year's home World Cup, was convincing against Norway. With two penalties saved, the 33-year-old became the match winner. This time he was lucky after just five minutes when the disc was scraped off the line after his mistake (5th). The Swiss increased the pressure - also because the German team responded to them with stupid penalty times. But the strong outnumbered game prevented dangerous situations.
