DEL winter game 2019 in Cologne: KEC against DEG in the RheinEnergie Stadium

Cologne (SID) As expected, the Kölner Haie have been awarded the 2019 winter game of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). The DEL announced this on Monday. On January 12, 2019, the Haie will meet Düsseldorfer EG in the derby at the RheinEnergie Stadium in Cologne. Up to 50.000 spectators can experience the spectacle live in the open air. “We are extremely pleased that our application for the Winter Games was successful and that our concept convinced those responsible,” said KEC Managing Director Oliver Müller. The DEL had announced that it would make its decision by February 16th. However, since the KEC was, according to information from several media outlets, the only applicant, the club was awarded the contract well before the original deadline. The KEC submitted its application on January 19th. The club is planning on a budget “in the low seven-figure range,” Müller said. Even at 43 percent capacity (21.500 spectators), the costs are fully covered. “Accordingly, the risk of economic failure is relatively low if we do our homework well. It will definitely not be a sure-fire success,” said Müller. If the match is sold out, a profit in the “mid six-figure range” is possible. The Haie had already applied for the 2015 winter game, which should have taken place in the Schalke arena. However, the DEL awarded this match to Düsseldorf. A European record for a league game was set in the Esprit Arena with 51.125 spectators; DEG beat Cologne 3-2.
