HC Bozen secures the Supercup in the penalty shootout - VIDEO

HC Bozen played with their best players in the first competitive game of the season, while Cortina's coach Beddoes had to do without the long-term injured Luca Zanatta. The remaining squad players were at his disposal.

The spectators in the Olympic Stadium got their money's worth in the first third. Especially the Cortina supporters, because the Ampezzo team opened the scoring after just three minutes. After Bolzano's Sharp failed to hit the post, the home team switched quickly and sent Siddall alone towards the opposing goal. Ambrosi only knew how to help himself with a foul. The referee awarded a penalty. Siddall showed no nerves and made it 1-0. Only a short time later, captain De Bettin went one better when he was perfectly set up by ex-HCB striker Edwardson and scored from close range to make it 2-0. Now HC Bozen was finally shaken awake. The record champions reduced the score to 1:2 thanks to a power-play goal from Bernard (De Bettin was on the bench). Shortly before the first third siren the tie was restored when Walcher took advantage of a major blunder by Albert to callously score the score at 2-2.

As spectacular as the opening third was, the second half of the game was even less eventful. Both teams now limited themselves to controlled defensive work. Only the Bozen storm duo Flynn-Sharp repeatedly caused excitement in front of the opposing goal. However, the greatest scoring opportunities were reserved for Bernard and Insam, whose shots hit the post and the crossbar respectively. When Insam had his big chance, Adami was in the “cooler box” with a ten-minute penalty.

In the final third, however, the tide turned and from then on Cortina took over the game design. Siddall initially failed with a quick counter-attack before Mernardi was brilliantly put in the spotlight by Gron and single-handedly put the Ampezzo team back in the lead. However, Bolzano was not impressed and also threw everything into the balance. The offensive efforts were promptly rewarded: When De Bettin and Hay were languishing in the penalty box at the same time, Flynn took advantage of the numerical advantage to make it 3-3 with his first goal in the HCB jersey. Shortly before the end, Edwardson had the chance to score the winning goal, but his shot didn't find its way into the goal. The teams had to go into overtime.

Now it was the Cortina cracks who pushed for the winning goal. Edwardson failed again, a little later Felicetti equaled him. Bozen took an increased risk again when Egger and Borgatello were in the penalty box at the same time, but the defense around goalie Hell held tight until the end. The decision therefore had to be made in a penalty shootout. There the home side lost their nerve on all four attempts, while Sharp and McCutcheon scored for Bozen. The Supercup is traveling to the South Tyrolean state capital for the fourth time.

HC Bozen secures the Supercup in the penalty shootout - VIDEO

In the time-honored Olympic Stadium, the reigning champions HC Bozen defeated cup winners Hafro Cortina 4-3 after a penalty shootout. With their fourth title, the white-reds secured themselves as the sole record champions in this competition. HCB striker Mark McCutcheon scored the decisive penalty.
