HC Neumarkt is toying with the AHL

There are still numerous question marks behind the Alps Hockey League, or AHL for short. Both the detailed game dates and the exact field of participants are still unknown. However, today it was announced in the Milan press conference that teams must register by June 15th. The Italian championship title will probably be awarded in a Final Four among the best four Italian teams after the regular season.

The fact is that the international league will start its premiere season next autumn and seven former Serie A clubs, Ritten, Pustertal, Vipiteno, Val Gardena, Fassa, Asiago and Cortina, have also given their confirmation. The HC Neumarkt is expected to join them shortly. Valpellice's participation is uncertain.

The only thing missing is the definitive commitment

The club management of the Wild Goose, who were crowned champions in the INL two years ago, are eager to bring international ice hockey back to the Würtarena and put the last two difficult seasons in the first and second Italian leagues aside. “The Italian Ice Hockey Federation told us the general conditions of the AHL. If this remains the case, we will apply for participation,” said Matthias Bertignoll, one of the leading club officials at HC Neumarkt. However, he does not want to make a definitive commitment at this point: “If there are any deviations in the game dates, the foreigner regulations or the financial planning for league marketing, we will have to reconsider this step within the club. That’s why we’re waiting for a definitive letter from league officials.”

Now it is up to the AHL bosses to define the guidelines and conditions of participation in detail. If this takes place within the framework discussed so far, the league will probably have one more attraction with HC Neumarkt - especially from the perspective of South Tyrolean ice hockey.

The new, cross-border Alps Hockey League was presented in Milan on Monday. The association officials announced seven participants from Italy, but behind closed doors, plans have long been underway for the HC Neumarkt.
