HCB Südtirol wins an important away win at Znojmo

Although HCB Südtirol was at the last hole in defense on Saturday, the Talferstadt team celebrated a 2-1 away win at Orli Znojmo. Rick Schofield and Angelo Esposito were missing from Bolzano due to injuries, and stomach flu also slowed down Davide Nicoletti. In addition, Tom Pokel had to do without Enrico Miglioranzi, who took part in the Universiade in Trent with the Italian selection. Mark Santorelli, on the other hand, gritted his teeth – he was also weakened by a gastrointestinal virus. So Pokel only had five defenders at his disposal. But there was also good news. MacGregor Sharp returned to the team after surviving an appendectomy and an associated three-week injury break.

HCB Südtirol started extremely aggressively in the Czech Republic and immediately embarrassed Znojmo. After a hair-raising goalkeeping mistake by Sasu Hovi, Markus Gander scored after 7.45 minutes. It was the third goal of the season for the winger from Vipiteno. The goal woke up the home team, who now appeared dangerously in front of Hübl time and time again. But the Bolzano defense bar held tight. In the final phase, Pance and Beaudoin had two good counterattack opportunities, but they did not result in a goal.

After a few moments in the middle third, Kim Strömberg had the 2-0 on his stick, but the attacker ultimately didn't score. The hosts then took control of the game and pushed for the equalizer. But even after the second 20 minutes, the Füchse still had a narrow lead.

The match had to be decided in the final third. Znojmo tried with the crowbar, but even in several outnumbered situations the Czechs were unable to break through the South Tyrolean defensive bulwark. The Pokel team's penalty killing worked almost perfectly. Hübl was able to excel at a chance for Beroun. A little later, the referee team looked at the video evidence after Havlik scored and ultimately disallowed the goal because he had pushed the puck over the line with his hand. Almost immediately, Esposito made the preliminary decision when he defeated Hovi after a counterattack to make it 2-0 (47.00).

In the final phase, Piche had to go to the penalty box and just four seconds later the bell rang in the Talferstädter box. Lattner overcame Hübel and reduced the score to 1:2 from the home side's perspective (56.28). Znojmo then threw everything forward, but the Pokel team saved their lead over time.

The HCB Südtirol cannot rest on its laurels for long. In just 24 hours, tomorrow Sunday, the record champions will face Fehervar. Like HCB Südtirol, the Hungarians are also fighting for one of the first six places in the table, which guarantees direct entry into the playoffs.
