HCB Südtirol defeated Znojmo in a penalty shootout

Against the Czechs, who, like the “Foxes”, started the new season with three defeats, coach Tom Pokel once again placed his trust in Marcel Melichercik in goal. The Slovakian keeper started for the third time in four games and saw his team get off to a brisk start. Palmieri had the first chance after two minutes, but was unable to finish. As a result, however, the HCB lost the thread somewhat and was pushed back more and more into their own third. Znojmo created good opportunities and failed twice, first with Sulak (6') and then with Lakos (9'). In the 13th minute, Biro from the blue line found his master in Melichercik. The last excitement of the first third came from Bolzano's striker Vallerand, who missed the lead from close range.

Less than four minutes had been played in the middle period when Znojmo scored the first goal of the evening: ex-Sterzing attacker Hughesman was released in front of the goal and pushed the ideal preparatory work over the line to make it 1-0. Bolzano was by no means shocked by the deficit, but tried to respond quickly. But Frank, in a two-on-one situation, and Oleksuk alone in front of the goal, couldn't put the disc in the goal, so the home team's narrow lead remained. Shortly before the second third siren the time had come: Immediately after a Pokel timeout, Reid scored from the left face-off circle to equalize the score at 1-1.

Second penalty shootout in two days The last 20 minutes began with a save from the strong Melichercik, who canceled out a Pucher shot from point-blank range. Shortly afterwards, HC Bozen took the lead through Nick Palmieri. The crowd favorite netted through the legs of Znojmo keeper Schwarz and turned the result on its head. However, Bolzano's narrow lead only lasted a few minutes. When Bernard was sitting in the cooler, Pucher used a rebounded puck to equalize again. The Czechs then put Egger and Co. under vehement pressure, but Melichercik kept his team in the game again and again and saved the 2-2 score in extra time.

Znojmo also had more of the game in the extra minutes, but failed either due to their own inability or the Bolzano goalkeeper. With a minute to go in overtime, Root had the score at 3-2, but couldn't overcome Black. So – as on Friday against Vienna – the penalty shootout had to decide between victory and defeat. In contrast to the match in the Austrian capital, this time the HCB kept their nerve and secured the extra point thanks to Vallerand's decisive penalty.

HCB Südtirol clinched its first win of the season on the fourth matchday of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. After an even game, the people of Bolzano retained the upper hand against Olri Znojmo with a score of 3-2 after a penalty shootout.
