HCB Südtirol starts its CHL adventure

Since their opponents are clear favorites on paper, the white-reds in Finland and Sweden want to cut a good figure, especially on the ice. HC Bozen made their last appearance in the highest European Cup competition in the 1998-99 season, which was then played under the name “European Hockey League”. At that time the team was coached by Kent Johansson. One player was already in the squad at that time, namely goalie Günther Hell, who acted as Trevor Prior's backup. All other local cracks will make their debut in the CHL on Friday. It starts on Friday at 18.30:17.30 p.m. local time (14.30:XNUMX p.m. CEST), when Egger and Co. will face the Finnish first division club Turku. Immediately afterwards, the Talferstadt team will head to Sweden, where the duel against Linköping will take place on Sunday from XNUMX p.m.

Coach Mario Simioni will have a total of 18 players available on the first CHL weekend: the goalkeepers Hübl and Hell, the defenders Egger, Oberdörfer, Lee, Hofer, Crowley and Miglioranzi, the attackers De Simone, Sisca, Zanette, Gander, Bernard, Marco Insam, Zisser, Pance, Schofield and Frank. Last-minute newcomer Phil De Simone is likely to be used as a center in the first attacking block. Derek Nesbitt and Mark Cullen, however, only joined the club after the two CHL matches.

The opponents

TPS is one of the most successful sports clubs in Finland. Turku plays in the Liiga and plays its home games in the HK-areena, which has a capacity of almost 12.000 spectators. To date, TPS has won the Finnish championship eleven times: 1956, 1976, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2001 and most recently in 2010. HC Linköping is a relatively young Swedish ice hockey club from the city of the same name, Linköping, which was founded on August 4, 1976. The team has been playing in the highest Swedish league, the Elitserien, since 1999. Linköping plays its championship games in the Cloetta Center (8.500 seats), named after the main sponsor. The club has never won the Swedish championship, but has reached the final of the Elitenserien twice, in 2007 and 2008. The Swedes' coach is Roger Melin. The star of the team, however, is the 40-year-old captain Magnus Johansson, who has also worked in the NHL. Linköping also relies on talented young talent, such as 19-year-old national goalkeeper Marcus Högberg and defender Jesper Pettersson, who is the same age.
