Thomas Tragust's difficult start to the season

The first division returnee from the North Tyrolean state capital started the new season with modest goals, but even the harshest critics had probably not predicted that the comeback in the EBEL would be so difficult. The Sharks suffered eight defeats in their first eight games. Thomas Tragust, who joined Innsbruck in the summer after working in Meran, Canazei, Kaufbeuren and Vipiteno, has also fallen short of expectations so far. Often let down by those in front of him, he was only able to defuse 86,5% of the shots on goal.

The debut in the highest Austrian league was still very promising: in the narrow defeat against the Graz 99er and its goalie Freddy Cloutier, Tragust achieved a catch rate of at least 93,5%. However, he was unable to maintain this average in the following championship games. Just one week later, Innsbruck suffered a bitter 0-9 defeat against Red Bull Salzburg. The Vinschger goalkeeper was in action until the second third break.

The fight for the starting position

After having to watch two games from the bench, Tragust returned to the ice on matchday six in the difficult away game against Znojmo. Despite the 3:5 defeat, he was able to convince with numerous saves and a catch rate of 90,7%. The former Sterzinger was then back in action on the eighth matchday, when the Innsbruck team lost 1-7 at home to Olimpija Ljubljana. The South Tyrolean was only able to fend off 78,8% of the shots.

These numbers do not do justice to Tragust's performance potential and can also be partially derived from the team's overall performance. Innsbruck not only has the poorest defense with 42 goals conceded, but also has the worst attack in the entire league with only 16 goals scored.

In the coming weeks, Tragust will continue his duel for the role as starting goalkeeper with Patrick Machreich and at the same time do everything he can to prove his class in Innsbruck. He has impressively shown that he has this in the past, both in the national team and in the Italian Serie A. Now it is up to him to meet the high standards of the EBEL.
