The Eagles finished the year as league leaders

After the narrow win against Turin in the Italian championship game on Saturday, a win against Salzburg in the last EWHL game before the end of the year was on the South Tyroleans' wish list. They made sure that this package would be under the Christmas tree. The Salzburg women came to Bolzano on a wave of success, as their win against Neuberg the day before meant they definitely qualified for the round of the top four.

In the hard-fought game - a total of 42 penalty minutes is unusually high for women's ice hockey - the home team kept its nerve and ultimately prevailed 5-2. However, the penalties had only a limited influence on the result, as both teams were only able to take advantage of one of the numerical advantage situations. The game starts with good chances on both sides. Only shortly before the end of the first third was Samantha Gius able to break the ice for the South Tyroleans. Beatrix Larger is responsible for the wonderfully played second goal for the Eagles South Tyrol, who dryly converts Melissa Piacentini's flash of inspiration. About halfway through the game, a 17-second blackout by the home team caused tension again. First, Eva Maria Verworner scored the goal for the guests in the majority, only 17 seconds later Sarah Campbell even equalized with a precise shot into the top corner. Good for the South Tyroleans that Nadia Mattivi took the lead again in the second third with an unstoppable hammer. In the final third, Salzburg threw everything forward and repeatedly presented the home team with special challenges until captain Chelsea Furlani secured the victory with two goals.

With 27 points from 11 games, the South Tyroleans are level on points with Budapest - which also has a game more - but are first due to the direct encounters. A psychologically not unimportant aspect that the players can definitely enjoy until January 28, 2017. Only then will Budapest get back into the EWHL action and could be at the top again if the Eagles South Tyrol don't score fully against the Vienna Sabers on January 21st - that will be the next game.
