The Foxes hit back with a home win

HC Bozen, who once again had to make do without their offensive players Markus Gander, Nick Palmieri and Joachim Ramoser, offered playoff ice hockey at its finest from the first second of the game. With high forechecking and a physical style of play, they put the Black Wings under pressure straight away. The initial storm and pressure phase was promptly rewarded: Daniel Glira and Travis Oleksuk made it to the advanced Ryan Glenn in the 4th minute, who didn't need to be asked twice and scored to make it 1-0. The Black Wings had no idea what was happening to them at this stage of the game. Only gradually were they able to free themselves from the grip and keep the game largely balanced. However, the HCB continued to hold the reins and gained a slight increase in chances. They left three power plays unused in the first third.

The second half of the game continued in the same vein: Bolzano was not only slightly superior to the Stahlstadters in terms of play, but also repeatedly got them into trouble with their tough style. At Linz, the absence of former HCB cracks Sebastien Pichè (suspended) and Rick Schofield (injured) was particularly noticeable. Even when they were outnumbered, the Foxes barely let their opponents shine. On the contrary: Daniel Frank and Jesse Root missed the best opportunities in front of the Linz goal. Brett McLean had the best chance for Linz, but he couldn't push the disc over the line after a rebound. Towards the end of the first third, Patrick Spannring failed in a one-on-one penalty kill against Bozen goalkeeper Marcel Melichercik. In return, Brodie Ried failed to extend Bolzano's lead twice. So we went into the second break with the score unchanged.

New additions Yogan and Sparks are crucial

The final third began with an ice-cold shower for the HCB: Daniel Oberkofler was given too much space on the blue line, he took two steps and shot from a tight angle. The puck hit the completely surprised Melichercik and the game was now completely open again. A thrilling exchange of blows developed in which the Foxes set the next exclamation mark. Daniel Frank sent Andrew Yogen on his way, who simply took the shot and pushed the hard rubber disc into the goal with the help of the inside post. If the mood in the ice wave was already near boiling point before the new leadership, Yogan literally brought it to the boil. The HCB also needed the support of their own fans because Linz then pushed for the equalizer in the power play. The former Bolzano player Joel Broda aimed just over. In the final phase, the Pokel team managed to keep the Black Wings away from their own goal with their disciplined and hardened style of play. There was hardly any danger anymore. Eight seconds before the end, Lindsay Sparks made the decision with an empty net goal. The quarter-final series begins again on Friday in Upper Austria.
