Dark times for Italian ice hockey

The data refers to the current season, whereby only the regular championship, i.e. without play-offs, was taken into account. Nevertheless, the values obtained provide a clear picture of where ice hockey is highly valued by spectators. And, on the other hand, where the situation looks bleak. Unfortunately, the second case applies to the domestic Serie A - and once again it becomes clear that something needs to be done in Italian hockey. If there is no cross-burner championship next season, those responsible will have to look for another solution to solve the ongoing problem with low viewership.

Serie A in third-to-last position Of the 17 highest leagues in Europe and Asia, the domestic ice hockey upper house only occupies the inglorious 751th place with an average of 15 spectators per game. Only the Extraliga in Belarus fares worse with an average of 750 spectators and the MOL League, consisting of teams from Romania and Hungary, with an average number of fans of 660. According to the Internet platform “Pointstreak”, Valpellice had the highest number of spectators at home games in the regular season with an average of 1131. Only one other Serie A team was able to break the thousand mark: HC Pustertal's games are attended by an average of 1043 hockey fans. The Italian Serie B, with an average of 406 spectators per game, is also not competitive compared to the other European leagues. Nevertheless, there is a very big fish swimming in the waters of the second division: Despite being in the second division, HC Milan managed to attract an average of 1637 spectators to its home games. This means that the Lombards not only have the highest value in Serie B, but are also far superior to the top clubs in Serie A.

HCB Südtirol just below the EBEL average The EBEL took seventh place in the spectator rankings, with an average of 2890 fans making the pilgrimage to the stadiums. HCB Südtirol narrowly missed this figure and welcomed an average of 2488 spectators to its games.

NLA in front of the DEL At the top of the ranking is the highest Swiss league, whose games are watched by an average of 7026 spectators. Just behind was the DEL, the highest German league, which can rely on an average of 6647 spectators. Switzerland is also superior to Germany at club level: an average of 16145 spectators go to SC Bern's home games - that's a peak that the Eisbären Berlin, which has the highest average number in Germany, cannot hold a candle to with 13.021.
