EBEL2: All Serie A clubs are pulling together

The Rittner Buam, HC Pustertal, the Broncos from Sterzing, HC Gröden, Asiago, Fassa and Cortina met for a meeting on Tuesday evening at the Eberle Congress Hotel in Bolzano. The aim was to set the course for a possible EBEL2. After a four-hour marathon session in which a lot of convincing had to be done, there is a concrete result: all seven Serie A clubs that belong to the Lega league association are pulling together and have spoken out in favor of an EBEL2.

“Of course I’m very relieved. We were able to convince the last doubters with our arguments. It is important to the clubs that they can play for the Italian championship title despite participating in the EBEL2, which will most likely be held under Austrian sports jurisdiction. The National Olympic Committee and the Italian Ice Sports Federation must look for a solution here. The Scudetto could be awarded in tournament form, as long as it is not possible for the best Italian team in the EBEL2 to automatically become Italian champions," explains Thomas Rottensteiner, President of the Rittner Buam, when asked by SportNews .

Rottensteiner: Discussions were held on behalf of all clubs

In recent weeks there have been extensive reports in the national media that only the South Tyrolean clubs want to emigrate to Austria or are the driving force behind the efforts. Rottensteiner would like to provide clarity here: “We thought about the future of Italian ice hockey in a joint Lega meeting months ago. There was no interest from the Serie B clubs in returning to the upper house. Because Austria is struggling with the same problems as us, we threw an EBEL2 into the room. This idea was considered good and we then held discussions with the Austrian association on behalf of all Serie A clubs. At first we had verbal authorization, then we even had the power of attorney given to us in writing.”

The timetable for the next few weeks was also developed at the meeting on Tuesday. All clubs should receive the invitation to tender by May 10th, and the registration period could end ten days later.
