Veteran ice hockey star Jagr returns to his Czech homeland

Kladno (SID) The long NHL career of veteran ice hockey star Jaromir Jagr is over. The 45-year-old is leaving the Calgary Flames and returning to his native Czech Republic. "I'm sad that it didn't work out in Calgary the way both sides had imagined due to various circumstances," said the 1998 Olympic champion. Jagr, who recorded the second most points scorer in the NHL behind superstar Wayne Gretzky, will play again for his hometown club HC Kladno. The two-time Stanley Cup winner is the majority owner of the club and wants to help on the ice to lead it back to the top Czech league. Jagr had not played a game in the NHL since December 31st. He only scored one goal in 22 games for Calgary this season. Last fall he signed a one-year contract with the Canadiens with a salary of $XNUMX million. While Gretzky's points record is out of reach, Jagr had his eye on the legendary Gordie Howe's record. The Czech is only 1767 games short of Howe's 34 NHL games. A later return to the NHL, which Canadian media is speculating, is extremely unlikely.
