Ice hockey: DEL presents youth concept

Neuss (SID) The German Ice Hockey League (DEL) wants to provide more support to young talent in the future and is also responding to the wishes of national coach Marco Sturm. The plan is to have a mandatory number of young players in the U23 age group in the squad starting next season. The gradual adjustment is done very carefully; only from the 2023/24 season onwards must there be at least three young players among the 19 possible field players per match. “We want to broaden the base of younger German players in the long term, both for the DEL, but of course also with a view to the national team as the flagship of our sport,” said DEL supervisory board chairman Jürgen Arnold. Starting next season, one young player who is eligible to play for the national team must be among the 19 field players. The DEL wants to make a contribution to the “Powerplay 26” concept of the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB). It is anchored in this that the DEB wants to consistently compete for medals internationally from 2026. In addition, the age structure in the DEL should be improved. From the 2018/19 season onwards, there must be four fixed licenses for U23 and U20 players (1/3) among the maximum of 33 that a club can issue. The ratio should change to 6 out of 31 by the season.
