Ice hockey: Germany Cup moves to Krefeld

Krefeld (SID) The German Ice Hockey Association (DEB) is moving its home tournament and returning to its roots. After three years in Augsburg - and a total of nine years in Bavaria - the Germany Cup will be held in Krefeld from November. “Going to the birthplace of the DEB after 55 years is a historical highlight,” said DEB President Franz Reindl on Thursday in the KönigPalast, the home of the Krefeld Pinguine in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). The DEB agreed on a three-year contract with the operators of the Krefeld Arena. "There were several applicants. We believe that we have a large catchment area in North Rhine-Westphalia," said Reindl. The DEB was founded in Krefeld in 1963. So far, only Slovakia has been confirmed as the German national team's opponent in the 29th edition of the traditional tournament. Canada, Russia and Switzerland applied for the other two starting places. Reindl has his eye on a record number of spectators in Krefeld: "The hall is big enough. It's a mini World Cup. If the quality is right, the spectators will come." In Augsburg last November, 32.000 fans attended a total of six games. Curious: KönigPalast has not yet signed a contract with the penguins for the next DEL season. “We have always found a way so far,” said Krefeld Mayor Frank Meyer, “I remain optimistic.”
