“Eliteliga Serie A” as a future project for domestic ice hockey

The outlines of the plan were agreed upon at a meeting on April 13 and will be implemented over the next five years. The main focus is on financial transparency and reducing the number of transfer card players. “We wanted to set the course for the future early on, now we have to wait for the ice hockey association’s decision. The goal is to plan the entire next season by the end of June,” explains Lega President Tommaso Teofoli.

The chairmen of the individual clubs have decided to rename the championship to the elite league Serie A in order to realign themselves from a financial and marketing perspective.

Five-year plan

A five-year project will come into effect at the start of next season. The biggest news concerns promotions and relegations, which are to be abolished in the future. In order to be able to take part in the top league in the future, the clubs must meet a number of sporting and financial criteria. At the moment, the first division teams from last season are part of the project, but it is also open to other clubs.

Financial fair play

The main goal for the individual clubs should be healthy economic activity and balanced accounting. In the future, they will be required to disclose their annual balance sheets. This is intended to ensure that mountains of debt do not grow.

Reduction of transfer card players

In the next season and the season after that, only five foreign players will be allowed per elite league team. From the 2015/2016 season onwards, the number will be reduced to four.

Farm team regulation The clubs have requested a simplification of the farm team regulations. This should make it easier to give a young player match practice in Serie A2. The exchange of players from the first to the second league should be simplified.
