Gary Prior leaves HC Gherdëina

Gary Prior will take a job at the Okanagan Hockey Academy Europe in St. Pölten, which will enable him to stay in Austria for a longer period of time. HC Gherdeina announced this in a press release on Tuesday. "We would like to thank Gary for his valuable work and commitment in the past season, which contributed significantly to the team's recovery in a sporting sense, and wish him all the best for his future activities," said the Ladin Serie A2 club. Prior followed in Thomas Kostner's footsteps in December and led the HCG into the playoffs, where the traditional club lost 1-4 in the series against eventual runner-up WSV Sterzing Weihenstephan in the semi-finals.

Gary Priors has very good references. After the 55-year-old American ended his active career with Finnish second division club Ketterä Imatra in 1986, he took over as head coach of the same team the following season. Until 1994 he worked for various teams in Finland and Norway and, among other things, coached SaiPa in the SM-Liiga (1988/1989 season).

In 1994, Gary Prior finally signed a contract as an assistant coach with the Augsburger Panthers in the DEL and a year later he was promoted to head coach. Prior stayed with the Panthers for four seasons before finally moving to the Heilbronner Falken in the second Bundesliga.

The first Italian adventure followed in 2000, when Prior took the coaching reins at Vipiteno. At that time the club played in the upper house of Italian ice hockey. A year later, however, he moved back to Germany where, among other things, he led EHC Munich from the Oberliga to the second Bundesliga as runners-up in the 2004/2005 season.

This was followed by a short stint in the Swiss National League B with SC Langenthal before he signed with HYS The Hague in the Dutch Ice Hockey League. In 2011/12, the 55-year-old former striker finally moved to EHC Lustenau in the Austrian National League. However, the employment relationships were terminated on November 15, 2012 due to different opinions on sporting matters between the board and the coach.
