Great anticipation for the Pond Hockey European Championships in Ritten

The Pond Hockey European Championships on Ritten have been well established since their debut in 2017. “There is no bigger event in Europe than ours. The European Championship is still unofficial, but we will do everything we can to make our European Championship official. The preparations are going very well, we are right on schedule,” said OK boss Wolfi Holzner, opening the well-attended media conference.

The tournament, to which a total of 50 teams from Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Sweden, the Czech Republic and the USA are expected, is already the third major sporting event in 2019. “After the European Speed Skating Championships and the European Curling Championships , which takes place at the beginning of February, the Rittner Eisring is once again the focus of interest with the Pond Hockey European Championships. It makes me proud that Klobenstein has developed into a mecca for ice sports. As a community, we are of course always happy to support the various initiatives,” explained Mayor Paul Lintner. Kurt Prast, the economic officer for the municipality of Ritten, also attended the media conference.

Ex-professionals pick up the bat again Numerous former ice hockey professionals take part in the Pond Hockey European Championships every year. Stefan Zisser and Alexander Egger, two of them who have celebrated great successes with HC Bozen in particular, did not miss the press conference at the Vogele inn. Zisser is now president of the national committee of the Italian Ice Sports Association. Tournaments like the one in Klobenstein are an improvement for the sport of hockey. “There are many recreational players or former professional players in South Tyrol who like to take part just for the fun of it. The advantage of pond hockey is that you don’t have to buy all the equipment and you can participate with little investment and effort,” said the 2014 EBEL champion.

Zisser himself will be competing with the HC Siebeneich team at Arena Ritten in just over three weeks. And thus be a serious competitor to last year's winners, the Huskies, who have further strengthened themselves with Alexander Egger. “As a former professional player, I was immediately hired by the Huskies shortly after my professional career ended. There is a lot of pressure to join the winning team right away,” joked the long-time Foxes captain, who, among other things, was able to lift the EBEL pot twice with the Bolzano team.

The rules of pond hockey are very simple. During the individual games, three players from a team consisting of up to eight players face each other. The game is played on two small goals without goalies. A match lasts 12 minutes, 20 minutes from the semi-finals onwards. Great supporting program The supporting program was also briefly discussed, which leaves nothing to be desired during the two-day sporting event at the Ritten Arena. On Friday evening (February 15th) the LEADS, a young band from Brixen, will play in the heated festival tent. Saturday (February 16th), however, is all about the legendary EULE party with DJ Peter, which takes place after the AHL match Rittner Buam – Val Gardena. Even the little ones have a lot to offer on Saturday at the traditional children's tournament, as well as children's entertainment in the tent.
