“I looked death in the eyes”

Miroslav Frycer will be buried in Ostrava on Friday afternoon. The former NHL player and long-time ice hockey coach died on Tuesday at the age of 61 due to liver failure. Frycer was closely connected to South Tyrol and left his mark as a player or coach in Bruneck, Meran and Ritten. With an interview from 2000, s+ looks back on an episode in which Frycer suffered a stroke of fate in Merano.

On December 28, 1999, Frycer underwent a liver transplant at the Innsbruck University Hospital. On February 10, 2000, an interview by Kurt Platter with the former exceptional player and successful coach appeared in the “Sport-Journal” of the daily newspaper Dolomiten under the title “Looking Death in the Eyes”. Below, s+ brings back the entire interview from back then, in which Frycer gave deep insights into his life. And among other things said: “Other NHL professionals took hard drugs, I drank alcohol. That was my drug.”
